  • Direct Injection and Carbon Build-up

Have been reading a bunch on this lately and was wondering if anyone here has had real world experience with carbon build-up and notable loss of power on their direct-injection motor? Apparently (or so I have read) this issue is more prevalent on the Audi FSI engines?

In a nutshell, just trying to decipher as to whether this is a serious problem that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer's or just a minor problem that the online gearheads are all freaking out over. Have always been thinking that an Audi would be the next whip in my stable but now I'm a little spooked.

seafoam works...but it does other stuff that you migth not want.

great way to get rid of carbon deposits is to actually DRIVE YOUR CAR. you run it hard and you're going to burn all that crap out of there.

Not to start an argument but the head in that link is off a stg 3 gti, i'm pretty sure it would get driven hard yet it still has some gnarly buildup.

Re: Direct Injection and Carbon Build-up

Big problems in some RS4s with build up and lots of those get driven. I hear it is similar to the build up VW had in the MK4 TDIs, Meyers has started doing a few at Das Auto he should be able to chime in.

Re: Direct Injection and Carbon Build-up

not driving your car also causes carbon, it might be more prevelant in the FSI engines regardless of how they get driven.

then just seafoam that **** and replace spark plugs and oil after.

so i was reading on the seafoam as i was thinking of trying..

some people just put it in thier gas and it cleans out injectors
others feed it into their intake to clean up oil.. if you dump it into the crankcase i guess it can cause your cats to die or gaskets die too.. hrmmmm

Re: Direct Injection and Carbon Build-up

I have seen this first hand, on a car that only receives the best oil and gasoline that can be put into it. Seafoam may work, but only if you use 4-5 full size cans of it. It is a nasty little design flaw in those motors.
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

You just pour the prescribed amount into the gas tank, then start the car and disconnect the intake line from the FPR, insert into the can of seafoam and run until the can is empty.

Don't put any in your oil.
