  • all wheel studs snapping at once?

so i was headed to BC for the night, cruising just past sunshine turn off going west bound on highway1
i heard a creek, and then another one. thought nothing of it.....
heard a creek then a BAMMMMMM!( metal contact)
i pull over as fast as i can, and i find that all 5 wheel studs have snapped off......
the brake is the only part touching my wheels.
they have been on the car since i did my coilovers, and i personally tq'd them to 90 ft lbs.( 2 months ago)
i have been on the track, and to the mountains.
could one have loosened off over time? and caused some chain reaction???

anyways i towed the car to a shop in banff recommended by a local friend, and got a ride home with another friend.

btw i removed the front bumper, so to get clearance on the flatbed.
oh! and the sideskirt, to get a jack under the car to put wood under the rotor
the wheels only got scratched in the inside dish.
they did not bounce off because the car was so low the fender held it in.
the only damage was a slightly bent fender.

has anyone heard of all 5 wheel studs snapping at once????????????

I know it's unlikely but I can only think that the wheel wasn't on properly... do you use hubcentric rings on the wheels? Could there have been some debris between the wheel and the hub when you put the wheel on? Something has been seriously putting stress on the bolts, the weight of the car has been rocking back and forth to weaken the metal as you've been driving....

What torque wrench are you using? A guy at work bought a canadian tire one and it was way off. Double check its calibrated properly but that sucks man.

You should retorque your bolts after 50-100kms. I have had a single bolt back out on me and it wobbled like crazy.

Same here, i noticed a wobble under braking, figured i'd check it at home, stopped at the carwash and the bolt was in by maybe 2 threads.

Guys, huge difference b/n loose and coming out vs breaking. Massive. OP is very lucky. Loose bolts you can even race on. You notice vibrations, and it gets worse, the more bolts you loose, btdt.

When I broke two off (out of 5) and it was not great. Similar to when they loosened out. But I blame fountain tire and air wrenches. Maybe in op case he had 1 or two go, then a third, and then when the final two snapped, the wheel came off and noise happened. For me, i dont know if one two went at the same time. I imagine if I kept driving, I would be in the same boat as the op. However, I noticed a bit of an extra vibration under braking, and I went out and checked. It wasn't that noticeable driving/steering vs braking. It was noticeabl, but way more slight driving.

wow, lucky you were fine and the car too. i swapped to my winters in Edmonton and just got back to Calgary. guess i should re torque them in the morning. i've had my husky torque wrench for 5 years now. do i need to calibrate it?
