  • DIY: tearing apart your MK4 armrest

I found myself in the unique situation where I have a good armrest but which needed the exterior replaced.

I looked around and after a long time searching I found nothing to help me.

So I took one arm rest, some tools and started pushing and pulling on stuff. After a lot of cuts and some broken plastic tabs:

Here is how to really dis-assemble an armrest!

    Tools:
    1x small flat screwdriver
    1x torx 6

    Arm rest

    How to:

    1. Remove the two easily viewable screws near the hinges -circled in green.

    2. Locate and unscrew the two hidden Torx 6 screws - circled in red. You will need to scrape off some fake fuzz covering them.

    3. Pry up the tabs with the screwdriver around the fuzzy area, push up on fuzzy zone and pull out on exterior plastic.

    4. Remove the two torx screws - circled in red. In blue you can see the hidden screws - put back for visual aid.

    7. Remove the lid cover by prying up.

Lid front - Circled in yellow are two clips that are very easy to break!

When you press the button (to move the arm rest up and down), there is a thin metal tab that goes from the button and pushes on this lever - the green arrow.

    Nice one.

What did you re-upholster it in? Or maybe I missed, it and you used black leather again?

I didn't re-upholster, I have 2 arm rests, one with good rear hinges and good lid hinges but with bad outer plastic and arm cover upholstery; And another with good plastic and upholstery but broken hinges. So I took them both apart and reassembled to make one good one.
