So my friend found a 2007 Golf City to replace her mk6 TDI Jetta that was recently written off, and she's up for some light mods.

Since I'm most familiar with the B3/4/5/6/7 platform of Audis, clue me in:

-- Where are the best sites to look?

-- What are the bang for buck mods that are actually worthwhile?

-- What mods are all hype?

So far I have found an exhaust on Amazon for ~$265 and some wheels and winter rubber for her... but I have the feeling she'll be looking for some more personal touches to add down the road.

As most people will say, no point in doing engine mods. Stick to the aesthetics. Short ram intake will make the car sound decent. I didn't bother with exhaust on my 2.0. Decent coils and wheels will be good.

If she likes doing things herself, check these out:

Filter out all the bullsh*t in the mk4 forums on vortex and you can some good info in there.

    Love me some 2.0.

All in all 8vs are mostly designed for reliability and not power. I'd stick to just aesthetics as Danny said. The only worthwhile performance mod I can think of is a cam/chip. I've heard the cam gives a nice noticable power increase and the chip will make it more responsive and match the ECU map to the cam. Those 2.0s can take a beating though!

            Cool, good tip... thanks

Is there a cam/chip set up people tend to prefer?

Honestly I haven't seen too many people cam MK4 2.0s haha. But I think something around 260-270 would be good for a daily. Here's a link to TT's website. 2.0 cams are cheap too!

Check out my twin intake setup(<$10), get you cold air and sound without worrying about hydrolocking and you can use stock filters! I honestly wouldn't put an exhaust on a 8v because the 8v with an exhaust at my school sounds like it's broken.... Get some nice coilovers and search for some wheels during winter. It might not go very fast in a straight line but it can still take turns fast. The best money I've ever spent on my car was an OEM steel skid plate.
                  Dip the interior trims pink.....

I would recommend ordering through Calgary Autoworks, saved me so much on tax and shipping.

My mk3 had a 2.0 and I had an intake, chip and cat back exhaust for engine mods on it, in my opinion the exhaust was great ... 2.5 inch sounded great on wot but didn't drone on highway speeds ,it was a tectonic from concept 1, chip was auto tech and was good also. Super fun car .

                          Those engines are bulletproof also!

^Agree with Lars. I had a SRI and a 2.25" exhaust on my 1.8L 8v (MK2) and I loved how it sounded. It was loudish, but not ricey. It definitely suited my slammed MK2 lol.
It was a TT catback with a dynomax muffler and magnaflow dual tips. Considering using it on my VR too. I'd say intake, exhaust, cam, and chip would be as far as I'd go with an 8v, performance wise.

The 8v can sound real good with the right exhaust. Mine has a 2.25'' magnaflow cat back with high flow cat, i think it sounds really good but is quite loud on the highway. I enjoyed a camshaft but only worth while if you drive in high RPM's. If your friend only creeps in the low RPM's, don't do a cam. They tend to rob power from low end and put it high end.
