  • What's your best story: Roadside breakdown/repair

We've all had things go wrong while driving requiring a quick pull over to the side and some McGyver work or calling a tow truck.

One that stands out to me was when a friend and I were driving across the country and the alternator mount broke. the car died at an abandoned gas station in the middle of nowhere. Poking around I found the wire handle from a bucket. Using my pocket knife I bent that bucket wire and twisted it tight as possible. Drove with the bucket wire another 2000 Km to get to my destination. In fact that bucket wire stayed there for months since it worked fine.

Mine was with my Corrado G60. I was out of town visiting friends and we were out for dinner. When we went to drive back to their place from the restaurant, my throttle cable “broke”. My friends thought we would have to walk home (small town, no cabs).

I went into the kitchen and got some butcher’s twine and tied it to the throttle housing, ran it under the hood and in my driver’s window. Left hand-throttle, right hand steer and shift. Got us home.

In the morning I discovered it was only disconnected from the gas peddle. I wasn’t looking forward to a three hour highway drive including crossing the entire city to get home.
