  • Passat starting issues

    Hi,
At a loss on a hard starting issue on my 2005 Passat TDI.

Cold starts are good. Hot starts intermittently require a ton of cranking.

Swapped EGR (with another used one, but seems unlikely to have identical issue). Popped off charge hose and watched antishudder valve stay wide open. Checked fuel flow from lift pump before and after fuel filter (before tandem pump). Don't have tools to check fuel pressure but there is lots of volume. Have looked at fuel and coolant temp sensors. They match what an infrared thermometer reads. Could still have intermittent issue I suppose.

    No codes.

Not really sure where to go next. Common similar issues seem to be starter not cranking fast enough, bit it sure seems to be turning ok. Also, bad temperature readings seem a common one. Some say crank sensor but this seems to cause other issues when running and it has no issues once running.

Injectors seem within spec on VCDS. Timing torsion value at 0. 0 to 0.5 is spec I believe.

Sooo... Any thoughts? I'm not quite ready to book it in!

    Thanks all.

Not sure if you found a fix or not. So you said you checked timing via VCDS? To me, it sounds like timing. What about glow plugs? Doesn't make a ton of sense that its good for cold and bad for warm but maybe the harness is no good? I'm not as familiar with the 2.0 TDI's as I am with the 1.9. I do know someone with a few spare parts though....Once you figure out what it is.

Hi DJ, yeah, I did check timing and it was pretty darn good. I got an EGR from Ben though and after swapping that it seems to be behaving.
