  • What do TDI owners in Calgary use for oil?

    Hi,

I just bought a 2009 JSW TDI with approx 123,000km on it. I like to do my own oil changes. My last car was a 2000 Jetta 2.0 and I would buy the Castrol Edge w/Syntec 5w-30 from Costco for oil changes and usually a Quaker State or K&N filter from Canadian Tire. The car made it to 310,000km so I figure I treated it right. (Car is currently for sale for $900 btw)

Anyway, went shopping for oil for my new car yesterday. Went to Walmart, Canadian Tire, Part Source in Calgary and could not find any oil with vw 507.00 approval on it.

Where should I buy my oil and filters from now?!

I know you can get it from Tunedub, Concept1, Natty and of course, Calgary Autoworks.

Beyond that, I don't have any ideas.

I get it from Natty (Natty54), but I think I also saw it at Calgary Autoworks.

Partsource/napa can get 507 spec oil if you ask. Tell them your car, tell them its a tdi and they can get it. They can only get it week days and durring the day of course. Natty will probably be cheaper in the end, but I don't know by how much as I have no clue what the stores will sell the stuff for.
Walmart/canadian tire I wouldn't bother with for anything but power service for the winter time. Natty can get you good filters at good prices.

That's what I use too. I usually order from idparts.com as a kit with filters.

Fifth Ave uses 507.00 tdi spec, Castrol II03 AFAIK not sure though. Here is the picture http://www.deutscheautoparts.com/Vie...-195-M2/0/8615
. Last time I checked they were charging arm and leg for it.

Just called tunedub. The "knowledgeable" receptionist told me they only sell oil in bulk as all of their synthetic oil is in bulk containers. She says if you bring your own container they will sell you 50700 oil for $10/liter.

I asked here what oil it was exactly. All she could tell me was that it is Castrol brand oil, same as the dealers use.

$50 for 5 Liters seems like a decent price.

I think CAW sells their Liqui Moly for $70+ for 5 Liters... Does Liqui Moly have any advantages?

Re: What do TDI owners in Calgary use for oil?

The bottom three on Natty's list would be my choices, castrol is more of a last resort for me. Neve been a big fan of them for diesel oils, it goes back to when they first started selling oil for tdi's and they were not considered that good. Vw cares about the bottom line, ie how much does the oil cost and is it good until the warranty runs out. You probably won't have any problems with it, just something I have picked up in the last 15 years of vw diesel ownership.

Liquid Molly is also what I usually used.

You could also find out what the dealership charges for an oil change, last time I went there and it cost me $80 after taxes and they used oem vw tdi oil (I asked to see the bottle to be sure). :-)
