  • Re: VW in trouble

Volkswagen's long-awaited fix for the Dieselgate scandal has been submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board.

The automaker confirmed to Edmunds the proposal was submitted last Friday but declined to reveal what the fix entails. The company also noted the proposal only covers the 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder engine and not the 3.0-liter TDI V6 engine that also equipped with a defeat device.

Both organizations are reviewing the proposal and will work together to identify any necessary changes and to develop a recall plan. The California Air Resources Board went on to say "The remedy proposed in the recall must not only fix the violation in question, it must also address the safety, drivability, vehicle durability and fuel efficiency of the cars involved."

While the proposal in currently under review, pressure is building on Volkswagen to buy back vehicles that were equipped with a defeat device. In a letter sent to Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn, U.S. Senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal requested the company buy back affected models at a fair market price pre-dating the scandal. The Senators went on to describe Volkswagen's Goodwill Package of gift cards and free roadside assistance as "paltry compensation."

That's it? Install an inline air flow device to more accurately determine the airflow?
There has to be some type of software fix as well isn't there? To tighten down the fuel injection rates to match the more accurate air flow? And to get rid of the coding that is in fact this "cheat", shouldn't it be removed from the vehicle?

Both the 1.6 and 2.0 are getting a software update, and only the 1.6 is getting that new part apparently.

Not really a restriction. I am surprised that the diesels don't have a air straightener already. Very common when there is no room in from of the maf sensor to get a stable air flow. Harder to get 8"s of straight pipe in front of the MAF sensor. Sounds like this will have nothing to do with emissions but more to trying to recover some lost HP that will eventually need to be addressed when the actual emissions software fix is done. You need a stable, accurate MAF reading to get the most out a tune, and getting the most out of a tune has nothing to do with emissions.

My 06 TDI has something like this just before the MAF sensor, its a little short piece of pipe that looks exactly like the picture above except it has a section with even finer mesh.

I don't think so, snow would have to go through the air filter and the curved piped to reach it.

The so-called Dieselgate has taken its toll, as Volkswagen is reporting a major 25 percent decline in US sales.

It was September when the Environmental Protection Agency reported Volkswagen was cheating, using a defeat device to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide emitted during lab testing. Now, nearly two months later, the German manufacturer is experiencing big sales decline in the US, reporting 23,882 sales in November. Compared to the same month in 2014, this represents a drop by almost 8,000 units or 24.7 percent.

The Golf and Passat are the most affected models with sales down 64% and 60% respectively.

So far, from the beginning of the year until November, Volkswagen has managed to sell 318,484 vehicles in the country, down by 4.33 percent from last year’s 332,912 sales for the same period.

Commenting on the results, Mark McNabb, chief operating officer of Volkswagen America, said that “Volkswagen is working tirelessly on an approved remedy for the affected TDI vehicles. During this time we would like to thank our dealers and customers for their continued patience and loyalty.”

*Although with the Passat changing I am not sure if stock issues due to the model change are not at least a part of that decline.
