  • The Porsche 718 Thread

The Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman due next year will be offered with newly developed 2.0 and 2.5 turbocharged gasoline engines.

We all know the facelifted Boxster and Cayman will make the switch to turbocharging and now we have some concrete details about the new motors. Autocar had the opportunity to take the 718 Boxster for a quick spin and managed to find out it will have a flat-four unit codenamed “9A2B4T.” It has a single turbo and is capable of developing approximately 300 hp (220 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque, with the redline set at a little over 7,400 rpm.

As for the Boxster S and Cayman S, the engine in these two will have a 2.4- or 2.5-liter displacement and power will stand at around 360 hp (265 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). The turbocharger in this engine could use Porsche's proprietary Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) as implemented in the 911 Turbo.

According to Matthias Hofstetter, head of 718 powertrain development, engine packaging was a bit tricky. Ultimately, the job was done after the two front cylinders of the old engine were replaced by the turbocharger. The engine modifications have brought a bump in weight for the Boxster from 2,888 lbs (1,309 kg) to 3,086 lbs (1,400 kg), but even so performance is great. The standard Boxster model jumps to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.5 seconds whereas the Boxster S needs just 5 seconds. Thanks to downsizing, fuel efficiency has increased by about 4 mpg (1 liter / 100 km less than before).

Both models will be revealed early next year, with a public debut likely to take place in March during the Geneva Motor Show.

Porsche has officially unveiled the new 718 Boxster.

Looking instantly recognizable, the model has a more masculine front fascia which features larger air intakes and new bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. Moving further back, we can see revised side skirts, larger side air intakes, and new door handles. Other highlights include three-dimensional LED taillights and a new accent strip with Porsche lettering.

The interior largely carries over but the model has been equipped with a new dashboard that has circular air vents. Drivers will also find a new steering wheel and an updated Porsche Communication Management system.

The entry-level 718 Boxster is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat four engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Despite having significantly less displacement than the previous 2.7-liter flat six, the four-cylinder engine produces 35 hp and 74 lb-ft more than its predecessor.

Buyers looking for something more powerful can order the 718 Boxster S which features a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four engine with 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 35 hp and 43 lb-ft of torque.

When equipped with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, the 718 Boxster can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 170 mph. The 718 Boxster S completes the same task in 4.0 seconds before topping out at 177 mph.

Despite being significantly faster and more powerful, the new Boxster models are more fuel efficient as fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 13 percent.

The Porsche 718 Boxster is already available to order and U.S. pricing starts at $56,000 and tops out at $68,400 for the 718 Boxster S. Deliveries are slated for late June which makes the model a perfect summertime companion.

              Re: The Porsche 718 Thread

Although I'll wait to see the real thing in person... my analysis on paper is as follows:
              - That a$$ is futuristic... yet classy
              - Totally digging all of the horizontal lines used in the design
              - 6 speed manual... ahem... standard equipment
              - That flat-4 sounds pretty sweet to me with the sports exhaust
              - 0-100kph times in the 4's
              - With a price that's actually achievable for some

Hmmm... me thinks the worst thing about the 718 Boxster right now is that the 718 Cayman will be just around the corner!

                718 Cayman

There aren’t any surprises in terms of design since it looks exactly as you would expect, like a 718 Boxster with a fixed metal roof. Besides the name change, the new version brings a brand new heart in the form of turbocharged four-cylinder engines replacing the old naturally-aspirated six-cylinder units. The base version has a 2.0-liter with 300 horsepower (220 kilowatts) and 280 pound-feet (380 newton meters) while the S model upgrades to a 2.5-liter delivering 350 hp (257 kW) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm).

In terms of performance, a 718 Cayman featuring the PDK and the optional Sport Chrono Package runs the sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in 4.7 seconds while the Cayman S can do it in 4.2 seconds. Porsche is quoting a top track speed of 170 mph (275 kph) for the regular model and 177 mph (285 kph) for the more potent S.

Aside from the new name and smaller engines, the Porsche 718 Cayman benefits from an optimized chassis with firmer springs and stabilizers along with retuned shock absorbers. Moreover, the steering is now 10 percent more direct and the rear wheels are one-half inch wider while the fresh set of tires boost cornering stability.

The interior was also the subject of a few changes, with new air vents, 918 Spyder-like design for the steering wheel, and standard Porsche Communication Management (PCM). At an additional cost, the 718 Cayman can get the Connect module which adds Porsche Car Connect, Apple CarPlay, and USB port. For more money, buyers can opt for the navigation module with voice control and real-time traffic information.

Already available on order, the 2017 Porsche Cayman costs $53,900 MSRP while the punchier S will set you back $66,300, with both prices excluding the $1,050 delivery, processing, and handling fee. The European market launch is set for late September while the U.S. version is bound to hit dealers at the end of November.
