  • Aston Martin x Red Bull Hyper Car...

Aston Martin has announced it will join forces with Red Bull to create the "ultimate hypercar."

The two companies have confirmed a long-term technological relationship that will result in a “ground-breaking Aston Martin hypercar” in the coming years. To celebrate the Innovation Partnership, Red Bull’s RB12 Formula 1 car will carry AM’s wings logo throughout the 2016 season, making debut at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Codenamed Project AM-RB 001, the new hypercar will be designed by Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer, and Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s design chief since 2005. It will represent “the ultimate blend of cutting edge F1 technology with Aston Martin’s signature sports car design,” according to the British luxury manufacturer.

“Formula One offers the ultimate global stage to build wider awareness of the Aston Martin brand,” Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer commented. “However, this partnership will deliver even more than that when the hypercar that Aston Martin and Adrian Newey are in the process of developing hits the road.”

“This is a very exciting project for everyone at Red Bull Racing,” Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner added. “Through this Innovation Partnership the iconic Aston Martin logo will return to grand prix racing for the first time since 1960, and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, led by Adrian, will be harnessing our Formula One DNA to produce the ultimate of all road cars.”

Official details are scarce at the moment, but reports suggest the hypercar will feature a mid-mounted hybrid powertrain, combining a newly-developed internal combustion engine with electric motors and F1-inspired kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). Aston Martin will produce only a handful copies with each of them carrying a price of more than $2.4 million.

Re: Aston Martin x Red Bull Hyper Car...

After months of speculation and having little more than wavy green lines to suggest its shape, Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing are finally unveiling the design for their AM-RB 001 hypercar. Ultra-wealthy enthusiasts around the world have to wait until 2018 to get one, but at least they now have a picture to put on their yacht’s refrigerator. Buyers need to be quick to make a reservation, too, because Aston Martin plans to build between 99 and 150 road-going examples and 25 track-only versions.

The AM-RB 001’s ultra-low, swoopy shape comes from collaboration among Red Bull Racing Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, and Aston Martin Chief Special Operations Officer David King. The design puts a value on performance rather being recognizably an Aston Martin. For example, the lower air dam pays homage to the brand’s styling cues, but otherwise the hypercar looks tailor-made to slice through the air. The vehicle reportedly produces massive amounts of downforce thanks to Newey’s use of underfloor aerodynamics.

Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing are promising revolutionary performance when the AM-RB 001 arrives. Power comes from a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V12, and the mill gives the hypercar a one horsepower per kilogram power-to-weight ratio. The engine might be a further development of the 7.0-liter V12 in the Vulcan, which produces 820 horsepower. With no additional tweaks, that could put the AM-RB 001's weight as low as 820 kg (1,808 pounds). Red Bull Advanced Technologies is also developing a new transmission to get the most from the powerplant.

For customers who want even more, the Aston Martin will build a track-only version that will be even quicker. The company keeps the details light for now, but its announcement promises performance on par with an LMP1 race car.

Together with Red Bull, Aston Martin introduced the AM-RB 001 much to the surprise of onlooking press. It was the first time the two companies had partnered on a car of this magnitude, and already, it’s looking to be one of the most intricate vehicles developed in recent history.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, chief technical officer Adrian Newey divulged some new details regarding the highly-advanced hypercar. The most impressive of which being speed — the AM-RB 001 is able to propel to 200 mph in just around 10 seconds A streamlined design and an advanced suspension system is mostly to thank.

"The key will be the car’s active suspension," said Newey in the interview. That active suspension will give the AM-RB 001 the ability to distinguish between road and track. On the track, a lower, stiffer setup will allow for optimum performance. On the road, a slightly softer and less inclined to break your back system will be implemented. It's the first time a car will use this type of self-intuitive technology.

“Nothing remotely like it has ever been tried on a road car,” said project engineer David King. “The numbers we are getting in the simulation are amazing.” Amazing indeed.

That 10-second, 200 mph in aided in part by nearly 4,400 pounds of downforce. Forgoing the typical and tacky rear wing, Newey opted instead for an advanced double-deck front splitter, an undercarriage that has the ability to compress and pressure air, causing lift, and a teardrop shaped canopy, which allows air to flow over and around it seamlessly.

Just 175 examples of this awe-inspiring hypercar will be built. Of which, 150 will be slated for road use, and another 25 will be destined solely for track use. As for the price, don’t expect anything south of $3M, further adding to the exclusivity of it all.
