  • Audi A5 2nd Gen Thread (2017+)

The Audi RS5 Coupe has been spied on the outskirts of the Nürburgring.

Dressed in swirly black and white camouflage, the high-performance model follows in the footsteps of the A5 and S5 but adopts a more aggressive front fascia with larger intakes. Additional changes are hard to see but it appears the RS5 has extended fender flares which suggests the model could have a wider track. The car has also been equipped with a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system, large five-spoke alloy wheels, and a short rear trunk with an integrated spoiler.

The interior will largely carryover from the standard model but we can expect an assortment of special touches including a flat-bottomed steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, and plenty of RS5 badging.

Audi has been tight-lipped about the model but previous reports have suggested the car could use a biturbo 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces between 420 and 450 horsepower. Fans will likely mourn the loss of the naturally-aspired 4.2-liter V8 engine but the new powertrain should help to significantly improve the model's fuel-efficiency.

The 2017 Audi A5 will be unveiled on June 2nd so expect the RS5 to debut sometime next year possibly as a 2018 model.

        Re: Audi A5 2nd Gen Thread (2017+)

“Our coupes turn every day into a holiday for our customers,” proclaimed Audi chairman of the board Rupert Stadler as he revealed the all-new A5 and S5 coupes in Germany today. Related to the 2017 Audi A4 sedan, the new coupes arrived with an evolutionary design but significant mechanical and technology upgrades.

“We have more performance and better fuel economy, much more space, and the standard spec brings our midsize coupes to the level of a luxury car,” Stadler continued.

Visually, the new Audi A5 and S5 don’t take a huge leap forward from their predecessors, instead tightening up the basic design language of the smart two-doors. Increased use of aluminum and high-strength steels helps cut weight by about 132 pounds, even though the car is 1.8 inches longer, and offers more interior and trunk room, and the resculpted exterior cuts a super-efficient 0.25 drag coefficient.

The Audi A5 will offer five different engines in Europe, and though few specs were shared, Stadler says they will be up to 20 percent more powerful than the old model’s engines while also cutting fuel consumption by about 20 percent. In the U.S. market, expect the Audi A5 to offer the same powertrain as the A4 sedan, meaning a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four good for 252 horsepower. Most models will use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, though European buyers can also opt for a six-speed manual, and an eight-speed automatic will be offered on the S5 and the top-spec 3.0-liter turbodiesel.

As with the new S4 sedan, the new Audi S5 packs Audi’s new 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine. It delivers 354 hp, with the sprint to 62 mph taking just 4.7 seconds. The S5 wears a sportier body kit and receives commensurate braking and handling upgrades to match its power, as well as special S-Line interior components. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.

New technology largely mirrors what is offered on the 2017 Audi A4, including the brand’s cool Virtual Cockpit fully digital instrument cluster, new active safety technology including exit warning and pre-collision braking, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration in the infotainment system. The A5 is also the first Audi to come with a new “unlimited” SIM card that works across Europe, without roaming charges, for in-car connectivity. The list of standard equipment (in European models) has grown to include LED head- and taillights, Bluetooth, Audi pre sense city pre-collision braking, and a 7-inch infotainment display.

Audi says the car’s chassis has been designed to be equally as comfortable on long highway trips as nimble on back roads, with a new electrohydraulic power steering setup said to provide “highly precise road feedback.”

Order books for the new Audi A5 and S5 open this July, with the first deliveries scheduled for the fall. The will reach the U.S. sometime after that, possibly in in 2017, with official specs and pricing figures for this market revealed closer to that time.

I thought the hood looked a little odd too - almost like it's pinched when looking at it straight-on from the front grill. Interior looks dope though!

Jesus that face is ugly, and the roof side profile is not as coupe like as the last one, they are caring too much about the peasants in the back seat.

                          Re: Audi A5 2nd Gen Thread (2017+)

Audi introduced the all-new S5 Coupe earlier this month and as you can see work is already well under way at the crown jewel of the family, the mighty RS5. The test mule spotted this week by our spy photographers looks pretty much the same as the S5 with just a couple of changes which reveal the car's true identity. The extra plastic bids on the wheel arches denote the RS5 will have wider tracks compared to the warm S5. In addition, the back of the car hosts dual oval exhaust tips which you will only find on Audi’s RS-badged models.

That means what we’re seeing here is actually the RS5 dressed in a slightly modified body of the S5. Audi will bid adieu to the naturally-aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine in order to make room for what it is believed to be an upgraded version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. In the S5, the new unit delivers 354 hp (260 kW) whereas in the RS5 it is expected to churn around 450 hp (331 kW) thanks to an extra turbocharger. That being said, perhaps it will get an electric compressor derived from the SQ7 as some reports are suggesting.

By making the switch to the MLB Evo platform, the new A5 has lost up to 132 pounds (60 kilograms), so expect the range-topping model to benefit from an extensive diet as well. Many will certainly miss the roar of the naturally-aspirated engine, but the new turbo unit will have more power and it’s going to be installed in a significantly lighter car, so performances will be superior. Downsizing will also pay dividends in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions which will go down quite a bit.

It’s not known at this point when Audi will introduce the RS5 Coupe, although chances are we won’t see it before the second half of 2017. It could debut on its home turf at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017 and go on sale before the year’s end.

                            Re: Audi A5 2nd Gen Thread (2017+)

Much to our surprise, the next-generation Audi A5 and S5 Sportback have finally made their media debut tonight, however, it is the styling that arrives as expected. With the speculation coming from spy photos and artist renderings since October last year, the visual revisions are on a subtle level, as already foreshadowed by the A5 Coupe.

Seven years in the making, and just ahead of its public debut in Paris next month, this second generation five-door coupe features a stretched wheelbase, short overhangs, wraparound domed hood, and a singleframe grille that is flatter and wider than the previous model. The shoulder line is deeply accentuated with a protruding double crease traveling just above the door handles. The rear end is a bit more shapely with the focal point being the arched luggage lid with its almost spoiler like lip edge.

The new Audi A5 Sportback interior, which has carried over from the new A4 sedan, has grown significantly. Length has increased by 17 millimeters (0.7 inch), driver and passenger's shoulder room is up 11 mm (0.4 in), and rear knee room has 24 mm (0.9 in) more. Judging by the photos, the interior is typical Audi sophistication with premium materials, precision of fit, and luxurious color blends. The instrument panel features a large 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit while the MMI comes with an 8.3-inch screen, touch-sensitive, and rotary control buttons for versatile operation of the infotainment system.

At market launch two TFSI and three TDI engine versions will be available. They will produce between 190 horsepower (140 kilowatts) and 286 hp (210 kW) of power. The most powerful version at launch is going to be the S5 with its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 354 hp (260 kW). This is 21 hp (15 kW) more than the outgoing S5. The sprint from standstill to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) arrives in just 4.7 seconds and continues on up to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Transmissions include six-speed manual, seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch, and eight-speed tiptronic. New to the range is a bivalent A5 Sportback g-tron which includes a 170 hp (125 kW) 2.0 TFSI engine and can run on Audi e-gas, natural gas as well as gasoline.

Somehow, the new Audi A5 Sportback is the lightest in the segment as the overall weight of this new generation riding on the MLB Evo platform has fallen by as much as 187.4 pounds (85 kilograms) to just 3,240.8 lb (1,470 kg) despite its larger size.

The new Audi A5 and S5 Sportback arrives in Germany and Europe in early 2017. The A5 Sportback starts from EUR 37,800 ($42,500). The price for the S5 is EUR 62,500 ($70,285).
