  • Takata Airbag Recall

Came home today to a letter from Audi saying my B7 S4 is being recalled for the passenger airbag defect.

They say no one should ride in the passenger seat but they don't have any parts to fix it and have no timelines. Not sure my wife is going to enjoy sitting in the back seat

For most cars the wait has been many years.

Any kind of laws/guidelines as to how long they can hold the car before having to reimburse you, either for loss of use or an outright buyback?

They aren't technically holding the car. They just say they'll send a letter once they have parts in stock but in the meantime try not sitting in the front passenger seat.

One thing this affects is the importing/exporting of cars between US and Canada. One of the requirements is that the car must have a letter from Audi stating that the car does not have any outstanding recall notices. Therefore any cars affected by the Takata airbags can not be imported from or exported to the US.

                Re: Takata Airbag Recall

I asked BMW late last year when I could get mine swapped out on the X5M and they basically said get in line. I believe all car companies have started fixing the oldest cars first since the Takata issue is most dangerous when the airbags hit 6 years or older. IIRC that is when the metal starts to break down and if an airbag deployment occurs at that point, there is a much higher chance that the occupants will have lovely metal shards blasted into their faces.

Temporary Fix: Just get some Daft Punk helmets for you and the wife and you'll be fine!

                    Re: Takata Airbag Recall

This recall has effected every brand and everyone is waiting for parts....You should only be worried if 1) you smell burning 2) live in a humid area like Florida. Everyone else, carry on...chevy is coming up to 2 years without parts...

You be able to just pull the relay for the airbag, although there is a chance that the relay also controls some essential function like the radio...

That seems like a bad idea! You want that airbag to go off in case of an accident.

"Eleven fatalities and more than 100 injuries have been linked to the Takata airbags, and in some cases the incidents were horrific, with metal shards penetrating a driver’s face and neck."

I think I'd try my luck without the bag......

This would be a great addition to the already existing "Takata Airbag Recall" thread.
