  • Possible 2011 A4 Purchase

Hi guys,. I'm looking at a 2011 A4 Avant for the wife. Just wondering if there are any items I should look out for. The one I am looking at has had the oil consumption issue dealt with by Glenmore. It also had the turbo replaced recently under warranty.

By 2011 they had most of the kinks worked out, not much to look out for. I'm very happy with mine.

I have heard of a few that had the oil issue "dealt with", having the rings done, but were still consuming large amounts of oil. It was mostly 2009/2010 with these issues.

See if it has had carbon cleaning done, diverter valve, etc.

        Re: Possible 2011 A4 Purchase

I have a 2011 and had to deal with the oil consumption issues at 80/85K - one lady owner car from Calgary. These 2.0t engines need to be 'bagged / treated mean' every once in a while; you tend to see less of the oil consumption issues on GTi's because they get treated to some beatings; seats the rings, pistons etc. better. A typical Avant owner would / does not treat them this way, especially as they were only available as an automatic. If the one you're looking at has had its oil consumption issues fixed, you're pretty much set with these cars - just go out and enjoy it more than you should every once in a while.
As far as carbon cleaning - on the 2.0ts its quite rare to require it; injectors and manifolds will fail long before carbon will effect it. Warmer climates experience the carbon problems more on these engines.
Not much else can (or has) gone wrong in the 2 years I've had my car and I have been mostly happy with it - the pano roof is slightly problematic on these in that it requires attention / maintenance more frequently than I believe it should but then I put this down to the dry climate we live in and rubber parts need lubing more often to stop potential creaking. The car is definitely something a bit different than the usual A4 round here; you don't see too many of them. Had plenty of compliments over the course of my ownership but bought another car a few weeks back (so it's now for sale if you're interested ).

Decided to pass on this one. Quite a nice car with great mechanical history. There was a minor issue but one that bugged me. If interested, I will discuss via PM.

Its the second one I've test driven, along with an A3 avant. First one got scooped on me because someone else made a better offer. The A3 had an engine bay full of coolant... So just a pass.

I have lots of time, so just going to keep eyes open and see what comes up.

Hold out for an S-line with the nav package. I wouldn't have mine any other way.

I would personally stick with the 2011s, the 8 speed ZF gearbox is years ahead of the 6 speed the 2009 and 10 had.

Good to know. Still learning about these cars. I knew there were multiple transmissions. The only one I knew I didn't want was the CVT, but realise now that's just the 2wd version.

Is the 2011 trans the same one used up to the end of the B8s?
