axel back Question

DO axel back exhaust system give you anything (gains), or are they just for sound.

I have scene many axel back systems for my 135i but im kinda confused why someone would want one if they do nothing but make your car sound better..

I could be wrong, but when i think of getting a better exhaust then stock im thinking your doing it to make gains....
