40" is slightly smaller than I wanted but it's a great deal, and from what I can tell, a solid TV.
I just bought this same TV but the 720p version and absolutely love it. 40'' is great for me as I'm a broke student in a small apartment, so the size was right, and so was the price.

For me LCD, was the only option. We game a lot and burn in is still a big issue with plasma.

Also, for me, 1080p wasn't a priority, as I've only come across one game (MGS4) that was made in 1080p, and blue ray quality is fine for me in 720p. Saved a lot of money going with 720 too.

    Hope that sort of helps.

    he is very correct .
i run a 42 inch Hitachi plasma in my living room i use for most watching the sun is out of that room by noon so it works great for most tv . and movies . i have a smaller lcd in my bedroom for Sunday morning hotrod tv type stuff cause its very bright in there . and in my theater i have a 60 inch plasma from LG .
The 60 inch has some weird burn in that i have never experienced from any other plasma i have had . so i am talking with lg on it because my Hitachi gets video games on it for hours and never burns an image on screen. most plasmas don't have the ghosting problem anymore thanks to changes in technology but be aware its a possibility if you plan on spending days playing you ps3(or xbox if your unlucky enough to own one lol jk) where lcd has never had this issue . but the lcd has nothing on the plasmas for color and blacks .

I mentioned correct seating distance... This chart should get you in the ballpark:

I don't have any direct experience with this one, but from the review on the 46" @ CNET, it seems like a pretty good tv for the money. You are going to see a little more motion blur than on the 120hz models, but on a 40" set, with the correct viewing distance, it will not be very noticeable. It has a lot of picture settings too (like most sammies) so you will be able to dial it in really well. Check on that AV forum to see what settings guys are using.

My dad and I both bought a 42" Toshiba Regza, has been a great TV.

I'll back up the Samsungs.. I researched for months before I bought my TV. I looked at them all! Ended up with the 40" Samsung 550. It was a reasonable price and had 1:30,000. I'm very happy with my purchase. Blu-rays look awesome on it!

You can look up the specs all you want... go to a few showrooms and just look at what you think looks good. That'll help narrow down your search.

Consumer Reports just did a bunch of testing on LCD/plasma TVs. I don't have the article near me right now, but I do recall that Samsungs placed at the top of most categories. I'll try to remember to post their findings later.

There is a lot of info out there about 120hz

    Here is a link:

And good info on LCDs in general can be found here:

    Good luck.

A couple things to keep in mind are the motion resolutions, this means how many lines are visible when you're watching something, you'll want something with around 650 if not more. The static resolution is usually bull because it'll always be right around 1080 or 900.
I appreciate all the inpute guys, thanks!

In regards to the 120hz filtering, I was under the presumption the higher this is the better (very profound I know ). How exactly does the 120hz rather than 60hz make the image look fake?

Also, I currently don't game, but am looking at getting a PS3 as well to catch up on years of missed DOD and Fifa... so I would want something good for gaming and watching.

I was going to get into this but Genius had it covered.

I was out last weekend picking up a Viera plasma and checked out the samsungs with 120hz ( ie: 650 series in a 46"). Northland Best Buy has one set up in a home theatre. They are a very nice tv. Not much pixelation, decent price, very little motion blur, fairly good color, etc... The Samsung I had in my movie room before the new Panasonic was great, for gaming especially. I will definitely get one when I pick up another LCD for the bedroom after christmas.

I have a 52" LG 1080P 120Hz and I love it, I picked it up about a month ago. Lots of HDMI ports and it was a pretty good price I'd say.
