Re: School zones in effect
Well, to be honest had a bit of a buzz going when that post was made.
A kid getting killed because a person failed to stop at a crosswalk has nothing to do with the times.
I don't ever remember running across a road to get a ball. I was brought up with the notion that if a car hits me, it wins. I didn't want to lose.
Rolling the time back won't do ****. What we need is better enforcement.
I drove through a school zone every single day, both ways, all through high-school, and only once did I see a cop car in that zone. Only once, in three years. I also went to the elementary I drove past. Ever so rarely would there be a cop there, and most of the time the cop that was there was just doing evals on the patrollers. No radar or nothing.

For those claiming that "kids should just know better" or "the stupid ones need to be eliminated", have you ever lost a ball in street hockey, basketball etc and run on the road not thinking about cars? I know I have when I was really young. I see kids bolt across the street all the time, In fact if you look in the thread about bad edmonton drivers there is a vid of a kid riding his bike out in front of the OPs car. And where, generally are the highest concentrations of kids?? schools.....
Some people will just never get it I guess and to claim the problem is not impatient drivers but rather "stupid kids" is pretty illogical.....Last edited by J-hop; 09-06-2010, 10:16 AM.

The LED construction sign heading west in Glenmore just before Blackfoot has a reminder for people about school zone times.

Re: School zones in effect
**** it.
I have never once even heard of a near collision in a school zone. I was a Patroller when I was in Elementary, back when it was hardcore. We actually had to stand in the middle of the street.
None of this standing off the one side behind some parked cars.
Some friends of ours said their kids start at 7 and are done at 2. That is whack! If I was up before 8, I was pissed.
If your kid is dumb enough to run out into the middle of a street...
I googled kids killed in school zones in Canada, got no returns. But instead learn that there were 153 killed by gun violence.
So lets preemptively solve a problem that isn't even a slight problem. Still having been hit by a car or three in my time. Whether the car is going 10Km/h or 45Km/h it still hurts.
Lets just start child proofing the world. No more sharp edges, no more fire, no more hot ****. Get used to arctic showers, and cold coffee. Then lets start burning books, reading can lead to dangerous thoughts. Wouldn't want that.

Can they still enforce the 7:30 tickets if the signage is still wrong?

Re: School zones in effect
i think this is an excellent idea, what people don't consider is all the kids walking to school or those that are dropped off earlier because their parents work. In elementary I was walking to school everyday and would get to school around 745-8am, making it start at 730 is a great way to try to reduce the number of kids killed in school zones every year.
for reference while I was in elementary, there were 3 kids killed at the crosswalk near my school, most of the accidents occurred in the morning. People are dumb in the morning, don't think about how tired they are and don't understand that in many cases a fatigued driver is just as bad as a drunk driver. having people driving slower, earlier than the kids arrive is an excellent solution.
What I can't stand these days are people that rip through playground zones at 8:25 because they think because the sign doesn't come into effect for another 5 mins that they'll be ok.
These laws aren't put in just to make you drive slower, they are there to save kids lives, people with kids probably have a better grasp of how important stuff like this is, the rest will just think its some inconvenience.Last edited by J-hop; 09-04-2010, 08:24 AM.

Re: School zones in effect
Keep in mind they also rolled back when they start.
It starts at 7:30, instead of the previous 8:00. What kid is it at school at 7:30? That kid needs to find a hobby.
