I think i have this too. It smells like a burning rubberish plastic like smell. It almost smells like coolant but to me, that smells like plastic. I just had work done on my timing belt and water pump, so maybe they screwed up the install and its been rubbing this whole time????

Are you running a MKV GTI/??

Not the tires i checked, Timing belt ??? not to sure how to check that.

Its hard to see in the engine bay since its dark, il will look for melted plastic/rubber tomorrow morning.

just out of paranoia id check the timing belt to see if it looks like its been rubbing somewhere. You dont want it to fail.

open up the hood and look for something melted. plastic or rubber would be my guess. sorry, that is all i have. i suck.

Has anyone had strange burning smells comming from under the hood?

In the past few days after driving the car, normal and hard ive had a weird smell. Like rubber burning or something plastic.

Any ideas.
