Since the starter works when you power it directly from the battery, it seems you have an issue with the wiring itself or a fuse.

I'm with him on this. If you jumpered it and it works then the ground is good, it's got to be the positive connection from the battery to the starter.

I used just a simple test light in the "signal" wire and it did not light up.

Might want to test voltage at the starter to make sure it’s getting juice.

So I am puzzled with my recent issue.

I have a 99 Passat wagon 1.8t (AEB). Background: Starter would spin, replaced timing belt and related items. After starter would spin as well, went to plug n the coolant temp sensor and starter stopped spinning (coincidence).

So basically need help to why my starter wont spin. Will spin if jump a hot wire over. Replaced ignition switch, Checked all the ccm wiring, relays both can be felt/heard activating.

Anyone have any other suggestions?
