  • Getting Brakes Fixed on a VW

So... the .:R needs new pads on all corners. I suppose after 7 years... she's definitely due. Anyhow, figured this wouldn't be a huge bill until the dealership gave me the initial quote... $1,200... for parts ONLY! WTF?! I enquired... "Why so much?" This was their answer:

When we do brakes pads and discs are both done at the same time. VW setups are designed this way and if you would like to do pads only we will do it but if you get any vibration/pulsation/any problems basically or cracked rotors because of this we cannot guarantee any work done.
Anyhow, was wondering what others have done with their brake jobs in the past and whether or not getting the full setup is necessary? The more I look at a potential $2,000 brake job... the better an aftermarket setup looks!

Go aftermarket. Grab some slotted rotters and ceramic pads. Shouldn't cost more than $300 for parts and find a decent shop to install it for a couple hundred bucks.

after 7 years, replacing pads without rotors probably isn't the best way to go. I'd say chances of vibrations and uneven wear are increased, as dealer suggested. I'd go aftermarket. In most cases, replacing brakes is not a big deal. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone to help you out. I went with Brembo rotors and PBR pads on my old jetta. The R32 rotors are on the expensive side though!

Like everyone else said, go with something after market & do it yourself, it's easy and it'll save yourself $$$. If not, take it to George/Tunedub or Paulo/Bert&Jacks.

Go aftermarket and install yourself. You will save big bucks and at least have it done properly.

Re: Getting Brakes Fixed on a VW

Thinking of going the Adam's route with their drilled rotors, STOPTech SS lines and STOPTech pads.

Although, others I've talked to have said that the aftermarket rotors aren't as good quality as the OEM ones... just more for looks than anything. That, combined with the fact that the dealership can probably get the job done in a couple of weeks vs. ordering off the 'net and waiting a month or so to get the parts... I'm definitely on the fence here. I was always happy with the OEM .:R stopping power.

My brakes are probably at like 1mm these days so I'm definitely quickly running out of time! Should have been on this earlier however, was too busy planning my recent Euro trip. Dammit.

If you get your parts from Natty it would only take a couple of days, I bet you can get the parts and DIY this weekend

Re: Getting Brakes Fixed on a VW

I would think Adams would have stuff here in less than a month or more.

Doing it yourself should take more than an afternoon, especially if you have 4 jackstands. Changing lines is a bit of a different story but that shouldn't take more than a day, with bleeding.

If I remember correctly when I ordered from Adam's Rotors it took about 3 weeks to arrive from the moment I finalized the order. It's been about a year since they were installed and have no complaints so far.
