  • Spacers, Fender pulling and lowering Questions

I'm a total lowering newbie. I was thinking of adding spacers to my MK4 TDI Jetta to widen the stance a bit, I'll eventually lower the car too but that will be later when I have more spare cash, until then I just want to make it a bit more aggressive looking.

How wide do the spacers need to be before you can actually see a change? 5mm? 8mm? 10mm? 15mm? 20mm?

What is the max spacer size before having to roll or pull the fenders (at stock height and at stock height-1 inch)?

I was thinking of going for a 1" drop only, any more and I think that I'll be scraping the front bumper on the road in front of my apartment. What brand type of drop should I get? Coilovers? Springs only?

All depends on what wheels you're running and the specs of them. But in general, with a 1 inch drop you shouldnt need to roll your fenders.

Spacers depend on what wheels you have. I'd probably do 15 front and 20 rear to get most oem wheels sit flush.

For lowering, get Raceland Ultimos. They ride very well for the price, are built well, and provide a large amount of height adjustment; close to stock height and very low.

You will not have to pull the fenders unless you are poking like mad and want to go very low. Rolling the front may be necessary under 2 inches of lowering depending on wheel specs.

Everything Ryan said^^^but know this with the Ultimos, I run 18 in Huffs, MKIV Golf, with 225 40r18's, and cranked all the way up in the rear, they were still rubbing fender liners(I won't remove the liners as I live in the mtns) I had to hockey puck them for the extra clearance. having said that, you can't beat the price...600$ shipped, taxes and broker fees.
And 30mm rear, and 25 front spacers

I pulled my liners and just sprayed under guard extra thick in multiple layers and the Gli is awesome.

I thought it was 10 front 20 rear for OEM flushness?

Re: Spacers, Fender pulling and lowering Questions

Alright, I'm going to look into getting the 10mm front and 20mm rear spacers then! And I'll do the under guard too, I did that previously to an F150 I had, made the ride much quieter. I may then later roll the front and rear and go for 20mm&30mm

On a side note: My fenders are rusting in the top, I understand there's a 12 year recall on that issue, so I'm going to get my fenders replaced before I do any fender pulling.

Re: Spacers, Fender pulling and lowering Questions

So, as usual my plans got totally changed. I grabbed those AMG Aero I wheels and now I have to figure out what will make them fit.

I know I need 5x100 to 5x112 adapters. The thinnest I've seen are 15mm which I am sure will push the rims out enough that I'll have to pull the fenders. My thinking was I will need to pull the rear about 15mm and the front about 10mm.

I was just wondering if anyone else has tried fitting wheels with this kind of offset? They are 17x8.5 front is ET30 the rear is ET18.

Also what tires should I put on these bad boys?

So they are 112 bolt pattern and without spacers the offsets of the wheels are et30/18....I think you may have one heck of a time making those things fit...unless you want to not lower it that much and have tons of poke...

I'll be lowering it only 1".

Fronts will fit without an issue.

On the front: 17x8.5 et8 on 205/45/17......a vortex classic. Plenty of room if you plan on going with a final offset of 15 on the front.

Your rears will poke hard so you will need to stretch like crazy, unsure how that would look if your ride height isn't nicely adjusted.

For example, here is 17x8.5 et17 on a 215/45, yours would poke almost 14mm more than this

The smallest adapter you can get is 15mm so your rear will be poking like mad at et3.

You'll need to be low enough to make them work, IMHO 1" is not gonna be enough and it's gonna look goofy. You have to be slammed with lots of stretch to make it work.

Actually navdeep, he isn't going to be lowered very much, which means his fronts will actually poke significantly more than the car you posted. If you are SLAMMED or on airride then those front wheels will sit flush or only poke a little bit, if he is only lowered a bit (1" like he says) then they are going to poke out a good 1/2" to 3/4" i believe.

I agree with the rears, they will poke a LOT! i don't think that anybody could find any ride height that would allow that amount of poke on only a 8.5 wide without the fender cutting into the tread pattern of the tire.

Of course if anybody can find pictures and proof to show me otherwise please feel free to, but i honestly think that these wheels won't work like you are hoping, and i hate to be the one to try to tell you that since you really like them
