  • 2011 Audi A1

Audi has revealed the highly-anticipated A1, ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Designed to be aggressive and elegant, the A1 measures 3.95 meters (12.96 feet) long, 1.74 meters (5.71 feet) wide, 1.42 meters (4.66 feet) tall, and has a wheelbase of 2.47 meters (8.10 feet). Major design features include a single frame grille, pronounced shoulder lines, sharply sloping C-pillars, and an available color-contrasted roof arch. Elsewhere, the A1 has ‘wings of an eagle' LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and 15- to 18-inch wheels.

Inside, the interior is typical Audi with high quality materials and premium accents. The dash was created to resemble the wings of an airplane (with the air vents acting as jet engines), while the center console was inspired by the stern of a yacht. In the rear, the luggage compartment holds 267 liters (9.43 cubic feet) and 920 liters (32.49 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down. Other highlights include LED interior lights, colorful upholstery, a media center, and a pop-up information display (with an efficiency program, which provides fuel consumption data and gives recommendations for efficient driving). Options include MMI navigation plus, a 465-watt Bose surround sound system, and panorama sunroof.

Under the hood, the A1 is avalible with two TFSI or two TDI engines (all four-cylinders). The 1.2-liter TFSI produces 63 kW (86 hp) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque, which enables the A1 to run from 0-100 km/h in 12.1 seconds (with a five-speed manual transmission), before topping out at 179 km/h (111 mph). While it's no rocket, the 1.2 TFSI consumes 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (46.12 US mpg), while emitting 119 grams of CO2/km (191.51 g/mile).

If you select the 1.4-liter TFSI, you'll be rewarded with 90 kW (122 hp) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. When paired to the optional the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, the A1 1.4 TFSI accelerates 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds (9.2 seconds with the six-speed manual) and has a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). While Audi declined to release emissions data, they stated the 1.4 TFSI consumes 5.1 (S tronic) and 5.4 (manual) liters per 100 km (43.56 and 46.12 US mpg) in the EU test cycle.

On the diesel side, Audi offers two 1.6-liter TDIs. The base unit produces 66 kW (90 hp) and 230 Nm (169 lb-ft) of torque, which allows the A1 to hit 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds, before peaking at 179 km/h (111 mph). In terms of efficiency, the engine consumes 3.8 liters/100 km (61.90 US mpg), while emitting 99 grams of CO2/km (159.33 g/mile).

The range-topping 1.6-liter TDI churns out 77 kW (105 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft), which results in a 0-100 km/h time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 187 km/h (116 mph). Despite the added performance, fuel efficiency only declines to 3.9 liters/100 km (60.31 US mpg).

Regardless of what engine is selected, they all feature "a recuperation system that allows them to recover energy during braking, and are coupled with an automatic start-stop system."

The A1 will go on sale this summer, with a base price of approximately €16,000.

Not bad, looks just like the spy shots/expected renders. At ~$25,000 it could make a splash too.

                A3 > A1, for sure.

I'm not really a fan of the back seat either, but I live more of a utility lifestyle. A1 is very.. singular purpose, similar to the cooper mini or smart car style cars.
