  • Audi Peeps, I need your opinion!

My buddy is looking to buy an Audi but doesnt know too much about them. He has his eye on one and is wondering if its worth it.

    2002 A4 1.8T Quattro
    200000kms
    5 Speed Manual
Guy says the timing belt is good for another 50000km's.

Car is priced at $5900. Is this worth it? It doesnt seem like a bad deal, but then again I dont know the market for these too well. What are some common issues with these? I'm guessing with proper maintenance that 1.8T is pretty bulletproof?

    Thoughts and opinions are appreciated

    TIA!

Coilpacks now have a recall so theyre free to get replaced. 1.8T's are quite reliable if properly maintained.

Do you have documentation of the previous timing belt change?

i would be far more concerned with control arms, clutch, condition of diff, etc. 1.8t motors are easy enough to find when something goes wrong, and the timing belt change is a cake walk. the parts that are wearing out are the biggest concern at 200K. have it completely checked out.

$6,000 is a mint one that has been fully reconditioned. $5,000 is the max I'd pay... less if it needs work done to it.

Re: Audi Peeps, I need your opinion!

2002 was still part of the sludge era, there is extended coverage for alot of VIN's but you need proof of proper oil changes in the proper intervals to get any sort of credit. 1.8t's are still great engines and my own choice if I were in the market for a B6. There are lots of little things on those that can add up - upper control arms, diff seal leaks, valve cover gaskets general maintenance can also catch people off guard. That all being said the after market offers everything for those vehicles now, so costs have come down considerably. The rule of thumb on timing belts never believe it has any time left on it unless you just had it changed yourself. Interval on that vehicle I think is 6 years or 130,000 kms, which ever comes first. I have seen lots of belts broken on cars that had another 30000 or 60000 kms to go on them, that were 7-9 years old. They are afterall just rubber and it does breakdown over time. Just make sure you check yourself or have someone you trust look at it. Have it checked out on a hoist before you pull the trigger on it it's checap insurance against blowing a bunch of money against the wall.

Good luck with your purchase and if you have any more questions feel free to post, PM or call.

Fair enough. As for price, if everything checks out to be good is this a good price? I'll probably recommend for him to take the car to either Tunedub or CAW (whoever is available first) for a full inspection if he is serious on buying, but it wont be worth inspecting if the price seems out of whack

Edit: Thanks Rob and Erik, you guys posted while I was writing. I'll let my buddy know and possibly go check the car out with him.

Just peeking at local Kijiji it seems a little light on the price, but it has more miles than the rest so for sure get it looked at.

                  1.8t Bulletproof

never heard those two things next to one another before

2002 A4 is a B5, I thought that the B5 was one of the worst for maintenance costs? B5 owners am I totally off base?

2002 is the first model year of B6's. 2001.5 is the last B5

2002 is a b6, and the first year of the generation, which I would probably never do. 200k is a lot though, unless its been taken care of it's whole life. Tell him to prepare to do some maintenance.

But I'd say $5900 is a good price. I've seem mk4's with more km's go for more than that.

I had a 2003 that I sold for $7000 last year this time, with 16x xxxkm so the price is fair.

Actually you weren't that far off. There was a 2002 B5 S4, only the A4's switched over to the B6 line in 2002.

                              i gots a 2002 b5....
though when you look at the manufacture date in the door jam its because it was made in like aug2001
hence the reference to 2001.5 as they did some small little tweaks in the production line
