  • If You Had To Buy A Clutch Over Again...

What would you choose and why?

I'm looking for something that has decent daily drive characteristics, so no 6-puck discs please... full face only. Something around 400-500 torques.

So far my best options are:

Southbend Stage 4 Extreme (Feramic full face sprung hub)

    ClutchNet RPN231/FCSN231

The SB is the leader because of their reputation and legendary customer service... but the ClutchNet comes highly recommended by VAG folk and is HALF the price!

Southbend was the previous clutch in my car which died a catstrophic death.

Now I have a Southbend again and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I can't speak to the longevity, but thus far I am enjoying my SPEC 3+, it is full face and it refuses to slip on my S4
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

My Clutchmasters FX400 (8 pad) has been excellent. Light pedal feel, somewhat grabby engagement but very managable for daily driving

          Was yours replaced under warranty?

How does it compare to the VAST clutches from before (pedal effort/engagement feel, etc)?

CM doesn't make clutches for my car AFAIK... but they were an initial front-runner as a carry-over from my B6 days.

No it was like 5/6 years old and I'm pretty sure it was a result of my bouncing my transmission off the ground at 120km/hour.

Im running the stage 3+ sprung one now and it it just a little stiffer than stock.

When it comes to SPEC, for the amount of torque you are talking about a SPEC 2 or 2+ would seem to hold, and be wayyyy more drivable than a 3+ ? AND seems to be more similar in design to the daily drivable southbend options?

But I don't have any experience... just going by what's available online...

Pedal feel is lighter, engagement is earlier and almost no slippage, with my LWFW it almost chatters. Hammer down it holds anything I throw at it

It is not as DD, but it will not fail me at the track

Believe me Jon, the other southbend and old VAST setups were far more DD friendly on the S4. The Spec 3+ is a little bit aggressive and chattery compared with others, but it's track record, pun intended speaks for itself

not doubting you at all Ryan, and this is the first real "performance" clutch i have driven with but i find it fine for DD, i have nothing else to compare it to of course

New clutch is for my black coupe, and the crate 6sp RS2 transmission that will be installed after the suspension/subframe overhaul is done.
