I don't understand why some of you guys are trashing the guy. There are quite a few On here with big money in b5 and b6 a4/s4's. B6 is over 11 years old now too. If he likes b5's or that's what he can afford knowing he wants to modify a car then go for it. You won't do a proper big turbo 1.8t for 10 grand anyway. I thought this forum was all about modifying cars and enjoying them with other enthusiasts.

I was just funning him with the Monster A4 pic. O34 time attach s4 is a 1.8 ( mind you i think they have a tad more than 10k in that mill) and that is a serious track car!

I am a fan of the B5 platform and i have had a fair number of Audi's. I think the B5 wide-body Avant is one of the nicest looking cars ever designed. I get a corporate lease every 3-4 years and usually buy them out as personal vehicles. I have had the 1996 A4 1.8, 1999.5 A4 1.8, 2000 s4(still have), 2004 s4 and 2010 S4( still have. the gap between S's was because i made the mistake of getting a 2007 FX35 pos). Hands down i prefer the b5 over the B6. B6 always left me uninspired driving back to back with a Chipped/Catback stage 1 b5. I will be buying out the lease of the B8 this summer and really am torn weather to mod it, sell it, or drive it bone stock and trade it one the coming B9. Dream scenario will be a widebody B5, but that may have to wait till you can import them easily in 1.5 years. Even though it is almost 14 years old i still think the b5 platform is a great base.

Now OP question. Screw the interior. Break out of the Box and put a 2.5 liter 5 pot with a turbo. Lots of future in that mill. Like a VR6 conversion but 200lbs lighter. Maybe a 6 speed? Oooo the sound of the audi 5 pot.

Now OP question. Screw the interior. Break out of the Box and put a 2.5 liter 5 pot with a turbo. Lots of future in that mill. Like a VR6 conversion but 200lbs lighter. Maybe a 6 speed? Oooo the sound of the audi 5 pot.

The 07k will find a way into at least one of my cars... 21st century head design is so efficient that the 4-valve 4pots can out flow a GT30R at around 21# boost, and the old 5cyl needed at least 10psi more. It's half a Lamborghini v10 for shat's sakes! Plus there's about 150,000 of them around vs the 5000 of the old ones... you can start to see where I'm going with this.

Here is the thing, a lot of people with big money in the B5 probably started when the car was newer and more valuable, and also put the money in slowly over time rather than all at once. This makes a difference - spending a few thousand here and there can be a "hobby" while spending 10K all at once is a one time investment.

Driving pleasure is about a lot more than HP, and I think this is something everyone learns over time. Of course you can get big HP out of a B5 S4 but as the car gets older and older, the platform won't compete as well in other categories. Heck half the people in this thread who are pro b5 don't own B5's themselves and it's not because they can't afford it. They've chosen to buy something else like a VW or a newer audi because they know that they will love the car more.

I completely agree with you as well your earlier post, and those that actually gave constructive feedback. What I don't agree with is the people that trashed on the OP. I would also buy a newer b7+ car if I had the money rather than dump money in a b5. But that's just me. I know there's still people on here playing with b5 s4's that love them. Still bad ass cars 12 years later.

I agree with this...well kind of...if this was 100% true then we all would be driving 10 year old Miatas. Lots of pure driving pleasure there. I have a newer Audi s4 and i love driving it, but there is something about driving a modified car. It takes a lot of mods to get a b5 S4 to handle like a stock b8 S4. That said it would take a lot to mod a b8 to get to the power of a modded b5 s4. After driving my b8 for a few weeks i just love driving the b5. Maybe it is the super stiff suspension? Maybe the stiff motor, trans, diff mounts that let you feel everything. Maybe it the power band of a twin turbo? Maybe it is just the distinct exhaust note.

We also have a ACR-SRT-4 track that, on paper and on the road/track, does everything better that any car I have driven. Stupid fast, weighs nothing with amazing handling and braking, and i hate driving it.

All this being said I would sell the lot for a new s6, if i could only get it past the accountant.

Well when I mentioned driving pleasure being about more than HP, I wasn't just thinking of a Miata type car.

There is also the pleasure of having a practical car, a reliable car that is not always breaking down or throwing codes, or a comfortable car, having a good entertainment system in the car to listen to your favorite track when you drive, having a clean car that isn't dented or dinged, having a car you can take on a long drive and not get sick of the exhaust drone, a car that you can drive with your wife or girlfriend in without pissing them off because of the rock hard ride, etc etc. A car where the maintenance costs are low so you can spend money on mods instead of fixing problems or rebuilding your turbo or axle or whatever for a 3rd time.

I think over time most people find a balance, and HP and even handling are still important but you won't want to sacrifice everything on an old platform just to get a faster 0-60. Especially since there is less and less chance to use that power, with tracks being all closed, more photo radar on the streets, more traffic on the streets... its not safe etc.

To me, putting 10K into a B5 a4 (and to some extent a seriously modded b5 s4) all at once is ignoring all of this.

On the other hand, if its your hobby and you love to slowly build up a project car, love to tinker and spend days every month and a bit of money every month, that is *awesome*.

Or if you are building a special project car, a huge unique build, or doing a restoration or something like that, sometimes you need a big investment to get what you want... but then you are trying to achieve something long-term and lasting out of the project. E.g. spending 10k to build the ultimate Mk1 GTI. But I don't think that is the case here, and if it is I seriously question the B5 again as the most promising platform. Even if you wanted to build a legendary b5, you would want to start with a s4 and put in a lot more than another 10k.

I don't know why you guys are being total d¡cks to him, he is my buddy and if you knew the guy you wouldn't be saying most of the sh¡t you are. I understand that you all have your personal preferences but he didn't ask what car he should buy, he asked what he could buy for the car he has. i dont think were being total dicks here at all.... lots of people here gave good suggestions. theres lots of things he could do for 10 grand. he could go big turbo, air, new wheels, maintenance if the car isn't in perfect condition... many people's personal opinion is to save for a newer car, i know i would. like pat said, many people definitely wouldn't throw 10 grand into a 15 year old chassis. He could sell his a4 and depending on what condition it is, he could end up buying a nice car for anywhere between 14-20000 bucks. that can definitely get you a b6 or even a b7. there are tons of options. Or why not spend a little bit of that money and put the rest of a savings account?

Anyways this is my theory, and correct me if i am wrong in any way but here it goes. He is your buddy, so my guess is that he is your age, in high school/just out of high school, got his first job, saved up some money living at home and wants to blow it to have a cool car. My personal life suggestion is to save that money for university, go somewhere in life and then drop money into a car once you have some major expenses out of the way (schooling, then house downpayment). Of course i have no idea on his financial situation, and if he has $50k saved up and only wants to spend 10K on a car, then let him do something original, get the chassis reinforced, do a full tear down of the car and restore it to original condition? Stiffen it up for rally cross? Put more power into it? However if he only has $10k to his name and wants to blow it on a car, i would suggest he either save MOST if not all the money or put it into a car which will last longer/be more reliable down the road so he can start saving up for more big expendatures in the future.
