  • B5 S4: What RPM?

As I have the wonderfully lazy Tip version, the auto mode has taught me to gear up quickly and I find I am driving in 4th or 5th for a lot of the time. Even in manual mode, I seem to "live" around 2000 rpm for normal driving. Where does everybody else tend to keep their rpm's for daily driving?

    Re: B5 S4: What RPM?

normal city driving is 60kmh at just over 2000 rpm in 4th, i like to keep it between 1800 and 2000 rpm for city driving. and highway is 120-130 @ 2800-3100 rpm in 6th

    i have a 6MT but i hope this helps.

          Re: B5 S4: What RPM?

I'm not sure about your guys' engine specifically but being in a higher gear usually doesn't equal gas savings. If there is constantly changing elevations/slopes or driving conditions then the higher the gear, the higher the actual load you have to put on the engine and the more gas your car will actually go.

On my 1.8t i tend to stick between 2500-3000 rpms while cruising at any given speed. I tried the whole "shift to 6th as soon as possible" scenario and it results in horrible fuel economy. The only time i ever just leave it in 6th is when the rpms land in the 2500+ range which is in my experience the best fuel economy for the 1.8t. I usually get 550+ kms/tank in the winter, and 600+ in the summers, bringing the rpms up so that when i shift, the next gear starts off at approx 2500rpms.

Again different engines, just wanted to give you another perspective

            Re: B5 S4: What RPM?

Sweet spot for the S4 from personal experience is also around the 2500 - 3000 RPM's. Deerfoot, for example, I'm normally in fifth and occasionally will shift to sixth when over 120.

I average around 500 km's per tank. Last 12 months I've averaged 12.30 L/100km (Using Road Trip for the iPhone to keep track of my gas consumption, awesome app )

              Re: B5 S4: What RPM?

depends on the size of your turbos too.
my car like 2600-3200rpm now a lot more just due to the larger turbos

                Re: B5 S4: What RPM?

Interesting. We can't really compare because of the ratios. 5AT vs 6MT. I've been driving at around 2k and shifting around 3k. Makes it smooth and quiet, but also sedate and boring. What's the point of having turbos if they never spool?

I still marvel at those who get 500km a tank. I'm happy to get 410 in the city. Tip can't make that much difference, can it? Around 50 to 54 L on a fill for me.

Lets all remeber boost plays abig part in fuel eco! its not always rpm. I get 450k to a tank with mainly hwy driving and i have awhole tank with not boosting. To many factors to consider...boost,turbos, tune, weight, how one drives, tires, issues with car,

that being said the best i ever.got was around 580-600k on a.tank stright hwy no stoping at 130-150 the whole way.

I haven't been able to best 300km a tank in town. It's more because I drive the car like a jackass though.

On the 24V VR6 I shift at around 2200 and usually keep the revs around 1500-1700rpm ish, I can get around 500km per tank, only about 50km less when I shift at 3000, and does 250 less when I shift at over 5k.
