i had a similar thud you guys speak about. it was the drive shaft support bearing.

Was reading up on unrelated matters over on Motorgeek, thought this tidbit from a highly respected individual might be relevant to your interests. Might be worth considering, if for no other reason than while you're in there...

Installed the Stern Power Ring yesterday as recommended by Ryan and due to the fact that he had one. Super easy install. It is a really well designed simple solution. Locks everything down but leave a little bit for isolation.
