Interesting indeed. Any reason why you wouldn't use Windshield suction cups?

I did this a couple nights out of shear boredome

      This was the result

I know it is ghetto, but it was stupid stiff. But I couldn't deal with the ghetto-ness so I am constructing a proper rig currently. I am no pro photog, therefor spend $500 on a rig just doesn't pay.

Re: MWDesign | E92 328xi: BEFORE AC Schnitzer Make Over.

I tried the windshield ones, they seem finicky when you pull and put force on them in awkward ways... I guess they'd be worth a shot but everyone else I know doing any sort of suction cup rig shooting use pump suction cups.

Rigs aren't cheap to make them properly safe, light, and portable.

My new setup is going to cost close to $3k Manfrotto pieces not included.

i priced out the parts and its not $500 if you buy the pieces and put it together yourself. i already spoke to someone at the camera store and have a lead on the manfrotto magic arm, the aluminum piping is easy to find, either at home depot or a metal scrap shop. The ballheads are relatively cheap ($50) and the suction cups even from adorama are only like $60 a pop.

I think Mike's in the same camp on this one; i'm not putting $2000+ of camera and glass on something that has even the possibility of not being stable and hitting the ground. It's just not worth it. Pay a little extra and do it right the first time and save some serious stress and grief.

            $105.00 Super Clamps
            $50.00 Light Stand Adapter
$140.00 Magic Arm w/ Camera mount
            $140.00 Suction Cups

            = $435.00 approx.

            Plus GST + Shipping

Plus your boom which will be a lot of trial and error to get it right.

I spent a TON of money getting my rig right and still am not very happy... I may just scrap what I have all together and restart.

that's if you buy everything new. i was poking around on some of the US craigslist sites and found a few items pretty quickly for a fair amount cheaper. shipping it all depends who you know and how you want to ship stuff up.
but yes to buy everything tomorrow new would be around $500.

What type of piping is your rig mike? aluminum?

I buy all new... I wouldn't want anything warped or anything and to have warranty on things if they mess up... I dunno just me I guess.

                  Aluminum right now.

Going to carbon / magnesium alloy and possibly even some glass components. =)
