To be more clear..Originally posted by onceover View PostA GTRS is a GT28, not sure where youre getting your information
The stock GT28 and GT28rs are different turbos.. but all come from the GT28 family. (As with the GT2871R)
The GTRS is a GT28 family turbo with a modified housing to fit on the stock manifold, as the stock GT turbos do not.

I think I got all of that right.. its been a while since I owned my 1.8T. (Which had a GT28 (APR Stage 3) then moved to a GT28rs (APR Stage 3+))

Re: Hooddub's Big Turbo B6 Build

O.o careful with them 2871r's. I know on my B5 I always felt like the motor was going to explode before I built the bottom end out!

The 2871r also comes in two different sizes does it not? Mine was a T25 with a .64 A/R I believe.

Really pretty color though!Last edited by ToXicXxX; 05-29-2014, 10:34 AM.

So size wise it would go GT28, GT(28)RS and then GT2871r?Originally posted by R-Audi View PostTo be more clear..

Or are the GT28 and GTRS the exact same size with a different housing?Evan

Not sure how you can 'feel' the bottom end wanting to give out? I ran a GTRS for over a year on 20lbs of boost and had no issues.Originally posted by ToXicXxX View PostO.o careful with them 2871r's. Re: Hooddub's Big Turbo B6 Build

I have done a bit of research and talked to some knowledgeable people and in my old engine plans (before buying the volvo as a winter car) i was going to run a GTX2867R turbocharger. A quicker spool and more top end (higher pressure ratio can be run more efficiently) than the GT2871R.
Was going to run the v-banded version of this turbo along with a 9.5:1 2.0 stroker and would have had very very quick spooling along with a fairly good upper range of the turbo without it completely running out of breath. It was my opinion of a very good fast street setup which wouldn't be a highway superstar and would actually have a daily driver feel. If you are serious about doing a well thought out full engine build shoot me a message and i can put you into contact with a few people.

I just mean it felt like too much power, and I was constantly scared. One of the guys from Audizine that helped me out a lot ended up cooking his stock bottom end with a 2871r, but he ended up over boosting quite a bit, due to a failed controller. I think he hit about 27 psi.Last edited by ToXicXxX; 05-29-2014, 11:14 AM.

Re: Hooddub's Big Turbo B6 Build

I'm still undecided on a GTRS and a GT2871r. I want a safe, reliable turbo set-up that will also be powerful enough to give a b6 s4 a run for it's money or catch an evo or STI by surprise.
Hence leaning towards a GT2871r because B6s are so frigging heavy.
That being said, I'm not interested in fully building my motor. Too much time and money that I don't have.
I will be coming up with a gameplan for everything eventually, and pricing everything out and all that.Evan

You'll do more then catch them... My B5 certainly did.Originally posted by hooddub View PostI'm still undecided on a GTRS and a GT2871r. I want a safe, reliable turbo set-up that will also be powerful enough to give a b6 s4 a run for it's money or catch an evo or STI by surprise.

Re: Hooddub's Big Turbo B6 Build

There's a guy named John (mainstayinc) on vortex who has done a ton of research on matching turbos to engines.

I'd have a quick look thru this thread and PM or post and ask him for advice based on your set up and goals.
