  • Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe

The CL-Class might be history but only a few will be disappointed after seeing its spiritual successor, the all-new S-Class Coupe which has made its debut today at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Envisioned as a "top-of-the-line model", the concept appears to be pretty much production-ready and thankfully it looks considerably different than its four-door siblings. The front fascia adopts a more aggressive appearance while the back is now home to sleek new horizontal taillights. The elegant and curvy lines of the regular S-Class have been taken to a whole new level as the Coupe concept looks gorgeous from just about any angle.

The muscular wheel arches host redesigned 21-inch wheels separated between the axles by a generous 2945mm wheelbase. The S-Class coupe concept is 5050mm long, 1985mm wide and 1409mm tall while under the hood hosts a V8 4,633cc Biturbo engine developing 455 bhp (339 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft).

Moving inside we notice a slightly modified layout with a white instrument panel and a more sculpted shape of its lower area thanks to the repositioning of the airbags. The ventilation nozzles are manufactured from white aluminum with ceramic-like inserts and brushed/polished aluminum. The two 12.3-inch screens have an 8:3 aspect ratio and are slimmer than the ones in the regular S-Class. Other interior highlights include aluminum door panels, supple calfskin for the seats and instrument panel, together with a handmade silk carpet and a hand-woven silk roofline.

It benefits from the Intelligent Drive technology comprising of two stereo cameras providing a 3D view of the area up to approximately 50 meters in front of the car with support for object detection and movement. It also monitors the car's surroundings over a range of up to 500 meters and will detect surface undulations to help the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension make the necessary changes to avoid a bumpy ride.

A production version will likely be unveiled in January 2014 at the North American International Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Not sure about the rear lights but that is quite pretty. Should have just called it the CL again though

MB seems to be simplifying their naming conventions and lineup, compared with BMW that is making it more confusing....

Looks nice, but I wish car manufacturers would start making their cars standard again and not auto or with paddle. Sad to see the clutch die out :(
