  • 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the S-Class Coupe production version, following a leaked photo which surfaced the web a couple of days ago.

The CL-Class is being phased out as Mercedes-Benz unveiled today the S-Class Coupe, a stylish and sleek two-door coupe which will be publicly introduced next month at the Geneva Motor Show. The model's design combines a long hood with a low greenhouse and muscular wheel arches hosting rims in sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches. The vehicle hosts a 2945mm wheelbase within an overall length of 5027mm, an 1899mm width and 1411mm height.

Step inside the premium cabin and you will immediately notice it's mostly carried over from the sedan but with a "Super Sport" steering wheel and the analog clock has been removed. In the back there are two individual seats while the interior can now be had in new saddle brown, Bengal red and porcelain hues. There's also an optional head-up full-color LED display projecting the virtual imagine with relevant details into the driver's field of vision to avoid distractions.

Previewed by the stunning Concept S-Class Coupe concept, upon launch it will be available as an S 500 Coupe model equipped with V8 4.7-liter engine delivering 455 HP (335 kW) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). Other variations will follow, including an S63 AMG Coupe model packing a twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter outputting 593 HP (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft).

With the S-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz is introducing an evolution of the MAGIC BODY CONTROL system now featuring a curve tilting function allowing the car to "lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier." The function can be active as one of the three driving modes between 19 mph (30 km/h) and 119 mph (180 km/h) and has been designed "to produce a more pleasant motoring experience" by reducing the lateral acceleration felt by the passengers. Within the windscreen there is a stereo camera which detects corners and works together with a transverse acceleration sensor. The air suspension's hydraulic damper units modify the rate of firmness and crucial base point individually for each damper and can incline the body of the car by up to 2.5 degrees.

Another interesting feature is the availability of optional headlamps with 47 Swarovski crystals, with 17 angular ones forming the flare-shaped daytime running lamps while the other 30 are round and form the turn indicator lamps.

One of the few new Merc cars I actually don't mind the styling of. Not sure about those huge contours on the side of the car, but overall it looks pretty nice.

                S63 Verison

Following the introduction of the S-Class Coupe last month, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the more potent S 63 AMG Coupe version.

Like most recent AMG models, the S63 AMG Coupe adopts a rather tamed and restrained exterior appearance with a slightly more aggressive body equipped with larger vents, muscular side skirts and a quad exhaust with chromed tailpipes flanking the glossy black diffuser. It rides on 19-inch titanium grey multi-spoke AMG forged light alloy wheels wrapped around in 255/45 R19 and 285/40 R19 tires.

Its heart and soul is a twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine delivering 577 bhp (430 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque which makes it 41 bhp (30 kW) and 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) more powerful than the outgoing CL 63 AMG. Besides the added muscles, the S63 AMG Coupe is also 65 kg (143 lbs) lighter compared to its predecessor and offers a power-to-weight ratio of 3.41 kg / bhp.

The rear-wheel drive model needs 4.3 seconds to get from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) and has an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Opt for the 4MATIC variant and the sprint time decreases to 3.9 seconds but we should mention Mercedes-Benz plans on offering this version only with a left-hand drive configuration. As usual, the engine is coupled to a seven-speed sports gearbox with three modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual).

Besides the usual AIRMATIC air suspension and MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe can also feature a curve tilting function which debuted on the regular S-Class Coupe enabling the vehicle to "lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier." It can be turned on between 19 mph (30 km/h) and 119 mph (180 km/h) and it's capable of diminishing the lateral accelerations felt by the passengers by inclining the body up to 2.5 degrees.

For more money the S63 AMG Coupe can be configured with ceramic composite brakes as well as 20-inch ten-spoke AMG Performance Studio wheels, while on the inside there are AMG sport seats, Nappa leather upholstery and a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel.

Like most recent AMG models, there will be an "Edition 1" version available only one year after the car's launch. It will come with Swarovski crystals in the LED headlights, AMG sport seats wrapped in Exclusive Nappa leather, bespoke floor mats, illuminated AMG lettering on the door sill panels, Night View Assist Plus, a high-gloss black wood trim and other goodies.
