    Re: New car options

Re: Sentra.....I had one as a rental car last year (I think it was a 2007 model). I found the car very cheap and plastic. The power was very low and the auto tranny was always shifting gears. I am sure that the rental car version is the basic stripped down model and one that a person might buy would have a few more features but I was not impressed with the car at all.

Were you looking at online stickers or in the dealer? My legacy wagon had a 5K rebate if you financed through the bank on top of the sale price being offered. G8 v6s have HUGE discounts so any domestic you should see what's on the floor.

My mk4 with the smallest legal rear facing child seat we could find forced the front seat 2 clicks from the very front. Even in the new 08 legacy I'm not as far back as I would prefer and you know I'm not a tall guy.

After looking at every car at the car show, the other dealer I'd hit up would be a ford dealer. The focus and 500 are pretty impressive and the value for $ is huge. Remember this is going to get puked and crapped on and scratched with strollers and high chairs etc.

Oh and a new Sonata is a huge value as well.

The money you save goes to buying YOUR fun car.

Yeah I don't mean to knock any particular dealership but for a while there, especially last year, you couldn't get a Calgary salesman at a lot of different car dealerships to knock off 1% but if you went out of town you would get 15% off no problem.

Maybe with economy slowing down, dealerships are willing to cut deals again...

Don't take my word for it though, you can phone dealerships in Vancouver and Edmonton and just tell them the bottom price you found in Calgary and ask them to call you back with a lower price, I bet they do

    MSRP/Sticker price vs Negotiated Price

Also that is why we drove to Edmonton, Lone Star had a 20-25% markup vs dealerships in Vancouver or Edmonton.

Sentra is a good reliable car but a lot like the Corolla, I think dependable but boring?

Crazy, did'nt think they were that cheap, gotta check them out. I was suprised how fun the sentra was (for the price) but it was the ser so its got the stiffer suspension, 225 width tires, hotter motor etc.

Test drove a few today. Rabbit, (thanks Derek) by far the most polished, good handling, power, little more expensive than the rest, kinda reminds me of my old vr6 in a good way.

Civic, drove nice prolly the cheapest car to own over five years after factoring in resale, fuel economy, free oil changes etc.

Sentra ser-this was pretty decent actually. 0% for 5 years and $22xxx 177hp, sunroof, cvt tranny. Fun to drive. Any input on these?

    Re: New car options

You seem biased towards teh Civic already?

Why are you only considering new cars - would you consider a 1 year old used car for example? You can get it with warranty and do very well from a dealership.

I would say that the Corolla is the most boring choice and if you are at all a passionate car owner you would throw that one out right now.

Seriously go test drive the Mercedes B200 as well, can get it with a turbo and there are good deals to be had. Awesome car, perfect daily driver. Not as expensive as you think.

If kids are in the future IMO none of those cars are a very good idea (maybe the mk5, haven't see a kid seat in that yet)

Accord 4cyl, G8 v6, Legacy wagon or sedan, Malibu. If no kids in next 5 years, disregard (however I suspect that's her reasoning for the 4 door req).
