I've been to court for a ticket before. I talked to the judge and explained that I was young and foolish/etc. Worked in my favour. However, this being his second offense, I bet they throw a book at him. Or the book. Either way he'll probably take some form of literature in the face. His lawyer will end up pleading down, and he'll pay some exorbitant amount of money to end up with few or no demerits. Lifestyle of the rich and famous baby! Plead guilty to a lesser offense, so you can offend again! Yeah!

if he was actaully going 240, why stop, aparently thats where the cop cars cut out, and the lambo will do alot more than 240, plus the cop would have to be going a good amount faster than 240 to catch him, they would call the helicopter but thats probly another 8 ish minutes away, more than enough time to hide

not when a judge is involved. court isn't at all like what it is portrayed on TV.
its best to sit down, shut up, and be good. this includes doing things before court and in the media.
cops/judges/etc. will look to make an example of any idiot who tries to embaress them. a 25 year old with a lambo caught speeding is a great candidate, and is almost a slam dunk.

A competent lawyer will plead down, not because its an easy day in court, but because when you plead down you give up your defense for a guaranteed deal. otherwise you stay to fight, and when you leave things in the hands of judges, boards, juries, and regulators you NEVER know what will be the outcome.
its all risk vs reward, and a guaranteed deal is a guaranteed deal.

i'm sure the driver will happily take a few demerit points over the possibility of losing his license for a lengthy period of time.

either way, he better learn a lesson, because he will become a target. and if he gets busted again and brought before a judge, the deal, if any, wont be nearly as nice the second time round.

X2, that's why if you look at a traffic ticket where they mark the means of establishing the speed (i.e. radar, surveillance aircraft, etc...) there's a box for officer estimated speed.

As it's been stated before, if there's any sort of traffic around it's not hard to come up with a reasonable estimate of how fast a vehicle is going. Also, remember that the cop's car has a speedometer as well. All a cop has to do is punch the accelerator until he/she matches the offending vehicle's speed and then turn on the lights. Their dash cam/speedo will provide all the evidence they need, no way around it.

If they guy has priors for major speed limit infractions then he's probably going to get hit hard in court. However I doubt that his forum posts will amount to much. The Crown prosecutor probably doesn't spend a lot of time on Beyond.ca.

I got pulled over once in Douglasdale, the officer said "I don't have a radar gun but it looked like you were going a little too fast". I was doing 50 in a 50 zone.

You should have asked him if you could guess his weight as it looks like he is a little fat. That is profiling in a very bad way when we could be spending time actually pulling people over who are a danger.

there isn't enough room on any congested road in calgary for him to "out run" the cops.

in his defense, his laywer will claim that he wasn't going that speed. it's fact that radars (including laser) are not accurate above 130 km/hr ..

he will have to take a defensive driving course. the fine will be $1000. his license will be suspended for 2 weeks. and his insurance will maintain ridicilously high. if he is a business owner, then the judge is not dealing with an individual, so his demerits will have nothing to do with the business. the business pays it's own insurance and most likely owns the car.

Just out of curiousity, did anyone actually read the thread? The police officer said he was doing 240 on deerfoot on a weekday afternoon. Who here drives deerfoot regularly durings the afternoon and thinks he would be able to do that?

I'm always on deerfoot between 3:30 to 4:30, and I can barely get in the 100's.

Maybe I misread.. but it was at noon wasnt it?

As long as you are on before 4:00 its fairly wide open... all he would need is a stretch of roughly 1km.
