Radar/Laser Detectors?

I think it's about time to start using a detector. Is there anyone here familiar with them? I'm not interested in the windshield ones. I'd like to get one hard wired like the Escort Passport 8500ci. They also make the 9500ci but it's 1000 bucks more. It has "shifting"... is that really worth it?

Don't get it for the sake of laser alone. It will detect it, but pretty much at the same time that they get a speed, unless you are lucky and get a bounce off another car. Most, if not all inner city police, other that photo radar units, use laser.
Radar, on the other hand, is dead easy to detect. I love mine on the highway where most mounties use radar. In the city, I don't even turn it on.

If you want it for inner city, get something with GPS that knows where all the fixed speed devices are. I don't have this feature, but I think it would be cool.

Do you get lots of laser tickets or drive fast in the city? If so, then yes the jammer is definitely worth it. $1000 now saves you $800 ticket and $1200 lawyer (don't ask how I know ) The 9500Ci has the GPS features (very handy for those damn cameras) as well as the laser jammer so it will cover all angles for you all in one package, hence the higher price than any other unit out there.

You can also do a 2 part system with a window mount and a fixed laser jammer but you have twice the controls/modules to manage and monitor.

Radar on the highway is almost a must in my mind. Very easy to catch well before you need to be worried, only problem being is even the RCMP are phasing in their laser units and all the speed traps I have see in the last 2 years have all been laser and not radar. Radar can be used stationary or while in motion, laser (or LIDAR for the techies) can only be used stationary. So if you are getting picked off in speed trap scenarios, you need a laser jammer as well as a radar detector, or a 9500Ci all in one.

I hear ya dude! I've been in the same boat for a long time but I just picked up an E46 M3 yesterday and I'm thinking it might get me into trouble. Maybe I'll stop into the shop sometime soon and we can chat it up. It sounds like radar might be what I'm mostly looking for.

V1's are great units, very strong detection, direction arrows can be helpful at times but you cannot disable any bands on it so 99% of our V1 customers shut their detector off in the city due to the mass of falses the V1 gives off. Useless device if shut off and stored away in the glove box for 80% of your driving. The Escort/Bel units can disable full bands or the GPS units can single out falses that are known to you/common in your driving pattern and ignore them next time you drive by (Escort is Auto-Learn or manual learn, Beltronics is manual learn only)

i prefer the V1 with a seperate laser jammer (lidatek).
you always end up compromising with you go with integrated units. V1 is what it is because its the best. there is no disputing it.
Lidatek makes an amazing standalone laser jamming unit which is again top rated. Both seperately cost about the same as the fully integrated Bell and Escort systems, but you end up with better stuff.

no jammer/detector is going to save you 100% of the time. They are wavelength jammers/detectors, not police common sense detectors. You drive like an idiot around town, you'll get tickets no matter what you have in your car. Common sense plays a huge part in avoiding tickets.

lol what are you talking about, of course you can disable bands on the V1, you can set auto mute, so it only alerts you over 50%, or 75% signal strength, there is a ton of stuff you can do. i disable K band in calgary, cause only Ka is used for photoradar and ghost cars and some audis use K band for side assist

people need to read instruction manuals a little more often

Anyone have any 1st hand experience with Escort Passport IQ? I read reviews online that it works just as well as 9500ix and the reason I like it is cause its also got navigation.

Old thread, so which one is the best right now? I have seen people complaining about 9500ci due to the newer technologies on cars. For instance, for cars with blind spot monitor may set off your 9500ci?

yeah if there are ones out now that screen out lane sensing and blind spot signals, I should start looking too.. Pain in the butt.

Both my parents vehicles are hard wired with the passport 9500ci and we love them! They have saved our butts many times and never let us down. It is expensive but very worth the money. The passport "shifters" are legal because they do not jam the signal of police but they simple do not allow a correct read so the cops radar gun gets a error message you can watch as the cop smacks the gun a couple times then try's again. It also has a feature were you can hit "mute which lets the police officer get a read once you have slowed down to proper speed. (:

This varies by province. I am 99.99999999991919919191% sure jammers are legal in AB, BC, and Sask. This was one of the first things I googled after getting my new car which was equipped with a jammer.

I have also done further research on RD enthusiast forums and from my quick search I found alot of people using them with references to laws stating they are legal, these posts were as of August 2013.
