k can agree with the 85%'ile rule

on the highway i'll do 10-20 over no issues; if traffic is heavy then obviously not; i'm not weaving in/out i'm going with the flow; if i'm downtown i'm not doing 80 i'm doing 40-50 max because that is what it should be; if your in a neighbourhood i usually go 10 under partially because its 30 in all airdrie neighbourhoods but also because there are alot of kids out there and i'd rather not run into some kid not paying attention

really i like the quote about people will drive to what they think is safe which makes sense to me

if you raised the limit on highway2 to 130 people aren't going to now go 150 they'll probably do 130


they talked about this on top gear this season on one of the episodes.

I never drive over the speed limit unless I want to have some fun. People hate me when I obey the limit, and there was once a dude in a Celica honked at me...

Ryan makes a good point, as much as ill comfortably do 10-15 over on deerfoot to keep with the flow, i wouldnt dream of doing that in a neighbourhood or a playground/school zone. Places like 17th ave i go 25-30 because thats just the natural speed of things, through where my parents live and whatever its 50, but ill go 30 knowing kids usually play out front and whatever. Im fine with going a comfortable speed as long as it doesnt mess with whats going on around you.

Well since this video came up here and several times on my FB news feed I thought I would give it a watch and yes it is both entertaining and makes many good points. The main point found in the title of the video and at the heart is money, speeding fills the provincial/city coffers (also increases insurance premiums often as well) and sensationalist news stories also sell ads and boost viewers, that is the core of this subject, not safety and not our best interests.

As noted, vehicle safety and road engineering has indeed improved yet speed limits have generally not increased to reflect these advancements and the statistics show declining rates. I think a key aspect of danger on a road is when you have the big gaps in speed between vehicles and this will be greater on roads with lower speed limits. The 6 lane road in the video with the 50kmh limit for instance will have a number of people going 70-80+ because of conditions and speed but with a limit so low you will always have a couple people doing near the limit and those varying rates of speed will create issues. Now if the limit was 70, I would think you would have a lot more people doing closer to the same rate of speed, of course some will always go faster but the average speeds will be closer and thus conditions should be safer.

Just the same with the QE2 if the limit went up to 120, of course some people will keep doing 150 but I think you will have less difference between the slower and faster groups creating a safer experience. That road should however be expanded to 3 lanes sooner than later with traffic flow though, to actually make it safer as it is just too busy and if people wanted to make things safer, that would be the biggest move in my opinion.

People do talk about German roads a lot as they are indeed faster, now not every road is unlimited and there are far less now than there used to be but many sections still exist. Peoples driving attitudes have to change though for that to work, an unlimited road has to be 3 lanes in each direction, large trucks are generally restricted to the right-hand lane only and the fast lane is for passing only, so as a normal driver you spend the bulk of your time in the middle lane. It should be noted that there are also many sections of the Autobahn that have limits and they are often still at 130.

As I do not drive in the UK I am not as privy to the details as some, but I personally have never seen a police officer operating a speed trap here. They do have speed cameras on the motorways of course, but I have never seen a manned speed trap. I have however seen police officers walk past my house on the beat many, many times. The road I live on is quite busy at times, but is also so narrow in places that you have to pull over to let vehicles pass when cars are parked on the sides, and the limit is 30mph, and when comparing that with the road in Vancouver from the video with a 50kmh limit is ridiculous and really seems to demonstrate the cash grab mentality that is really the key of this argument.

Speed usually isn't my issue driving on the road, it's other drivers bad/rude road etiquette i have a problem with. I get that the city grew real fast in a short amount of time and they have been playing catch up to get the roads set-up better so the congestion of the roads is less. People get real frustrated being delayed in traffic and it just turns to highway douchery.

I will mention i hate the camera tickets. I got one off 16th for speeding because i punched it going through a yellow light so i wouldn't get a red light ticket. . My wife also got 3 tickets in the mail in three days on ogden on her old commute a few years back she was only going i think around 14km/hr over each time,(driving with the flow of traffic). She learned her lesson the first time and if it she would have been pulled over initially she could have avoided the other two. First ticket she was upset, second she was right pissed, third ticket she cried lol.

UDOT opens up new 80 mph speed zones

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the speed limit has been increased to 80 mph in several areas of the state.

Following recently completed speed studies on several rural freeway sections, UDOT crews installed new 80 mph speed limit signs this week on I-80 from the Nevada border to state Route 36; I-15 between north Leeds and Santaquin, with sections of 75 mph zones through two mountain passes and Cedar City; and I-15 and I-84 from the Brigham City north interchange to the Idaho border.

UDOT stated that the speed limit increase was the result of HB83, passed during the 2013 Legislature, which allowed the department to study and establish speed limits higher than 75 mph on interstates.

UDOT’s data from speed studies of existing 80 mph zones showed that vehicle crashes have slightly dropped over the past three years, attributed to more vehicles traveling at the same speeds and less variation in the speed of surrounding vehicles.

Definitely a great start, however wrong country as personally I think the US roads a FAR superior than any of the garbage we get in Canada (the speed limits, the engineering of them, the way people drive on them, everything). 75mph is 120km/h which already is a decent speed. Then you get places like BC where every highway the max limit is 100km/h

Definitely a great start, however wrong country as personally I think the US roads a FAR superior than any of the garbage we get in Canada (the speed limits, the engineering of them, the way people drive on them, everything).

I feel the opposite really, when I drive in Washington the roads seem to be uneven, poorly maintained and dirty.

Roads up here are pretty good in my opinion. Remember that the change in temperatures we have on a daily basis affects greatly how we build and maintain our roads. Most of the US doesn't have to deal with these issues...

This is true. I should have stated I wasnt talking about maintenance. I think Calgary roads are terrible maintenance wise, but there are always worse places (downtown Seattle or Edmonton lol), however I sort of understand with out climate changes. I was more so talking about the lay out of the roads...

Example: the 3-4 tier highway interchanges, having proper merge lanes that allow traffic to enter on the right (instead of having vehicles turning left across 3 lanes of traffic into a high speed highway making them merge in to the left lane), Mile Markers, etc

This is exactly what I was going to point out. Not to be racist or generalized but how many people have been in an accident or near accident with an Asian driver? I have heard first had they can buy a license for about $60 and a lot of them show that lack of experience on the road. I am not saying they are the only nationality that are like that but it sure seems like they are the majority. End that type of crap and make sure everyone who gets a license has to speak one of our national languages because if they get in an accident it could mean the difference between life and death then we can move onto the rest of the careless drivers on the road.

I'm Chinese. i don't think its racist. i think its a common that Chinese drivers are horrible on the road. I'm talking about old Chinese people in their beige corollas. I was sideswiped by an old couple over a decade ago. Driver pulled over to let the passenger out and proceeded to find a parking spot. then they went for dim sum. a hit and run and eat. Even my mom drives crappy.

Another thing I have noticed is that people who have only ever driven automatics and always hit their brakes back things up like crazy. I have to drive Glenmore everyday and it gets backed up so quickly because people follow close and then hit the brakes which creates a chain reaction of people hitting the brakes. Next thing you know your in solid stop and go traffic. They aren't used to using the engine to slow the vehicle down and then it all goes to hell from there
