  • World Cup 2014 Thread

Well since we are on the eve of the World Cup 2014 starting I thought we could get a little discussion going on the teams, games and maybe all things Brazil. I am not really cheering for anyone in particular but as a resident of England now I will have to give them some of my support but it appears not very likely they will do all that well. I think the conditions should favour a South American team but I suppose anything can happen. The atmosphere over here is pretty nuts, there is World Cup everything, from England face paint at the grocery store to Brazil edition M&Ms, plus lots of excuses for people to buy new TVs. With the time change here most games are in the evening to fairly late (some 11pm starts) but I think that might draw some very big crowds and a few rough mornings at the offices around town!!

My biggest complaint with football (soccer) is the diving and chippy-ness that often occurs, I personally wish FIFA would get tough with this and either start calling double yellow cards, one for the foul and one for the dive/reaction, or look at giving post game violations after video reviews of such plays. Personally I think if you do this a bit it would stem the behaviour very quick and things could focus back on skill and athleticism.

    Anyway, on with the show!!

Blair, what's the feel around town for how England will do this World Cup?

I'll be cheering for Germany and England as per usual. England will always be my underdog pick though as they are consistent with under performing

I think the expectations are pretty low here for England, the squad is fairly young and unproven, the group is going to be tough to get out of and the opening game in the Amazon area is expected to be very difficult playing conditions, luckily that is against Italy as compared with Uruguay or Costa Rica.

Oh man. Croatia Vs, Brazil tomorrow. Wonder what the quality of Croatian football will be compared to Brazil's.

Are we placing bets on how many people die during riots and protests in Brazil?

I will be again following the English, & their injection of new blood. They being labelled as underdogs, and underestimated, hopefully fuels them past group stage.

Really keen to watch the story unfold with the world's best player as he carried them through qualification.

Quite the contrast to the second best player in the world, and his sub-par international play.

                Go France!

If France beats Brazil again there will be some serious riots.

As an FYI Brazil has played 103 matches as of mid 2013 in Maracana (seats 200,000 people) and their record is:

                      74 Victories
                      23 Draws
                      6 Losses

This is with 251 goals for and 70 goals against.

                      Not too shabby.

This will be a strange World Cup; hot climate, political unrest, many star players missing, etc.

                        Go mannschaft!

Sidewalks are for normal walkin.... aint no room for fancy walkin....

It's not South America without a little political unrest. As soon as the matches start they'll forget all the politics. Trust me.

And if I remember correctly the 2006 World Cup in Spain also saw temperatures near 30C.

So meh. Everything will be fine.

Should be a great World Cup. Brazil are on home soil. Will be good to see how European teams compete against the South Americans.

I had to admit, this is the weakest English team.
On a lighter note a friend of mine is going for a month and has tickets for the group stages, second round and quarter finals...
