  • Lets Talk Realiability , 4.2 V8 edition

To people who own or have owned the 4.2 V8. Howd you guys like it? Any issues?

I was looking at a few cars with this engine.. seems to be popular in the VW/Audi world. My main concern is high mileage ones. Anything specific to look out for? I noticed everysingle one had a very loud valve train.. apparently thats normal? :P

Depends which chain version....S4 or RS4. RS4 has no chain guide issues. S4 Does. Both engines however are prone to cylinder scoring, resulting in higher than average oil consumption. If you are looking at either, get a leakdown and compression test done and if possible, boroscope the cylinder walls!

Definitely cant buy an RS4 LOL, do the Touareg/Q7/B7 S4 share the same engine? Those were the ones I was looking at.

Doesn't the b7 s4 have the updated guides
So not as prone to failure as the b6 s

I don't mean to talk down a members car or anything, but I don't know if you want to own a w8. They're not cheap to fix at all if something goes wrong.

No offence taken, the W8 is expensive to fix, but it's no different than a well maintained 2.7 twin turbo, such as Rod's...the Passat has a newer engine transplanted by George at TuneDub, and I have no doubt that the car is good for at least another 150000kms with regular oil changes at 6-8000km intervals, as that's been the biggest issue with failures on W8's.

Thats what i thought. Ive been reading nothing but good reviews on the B7 S4s/newer Touaregs engines. Touaregs seem to struggle from other electronic issues though..
