So the seller let you keep the license plate? wouldnt that be against the law or something? and if anything happens on the road he would be responsible since its his old plate?

In California and other states (not sure if all) the plates are specific to the vehicle not like here where the plates are specific to the owner. I have a few plates from cars I have imported from the US.
