It seems I'm always on here asking for help... but what can I say

Any advice on how to speed up downloads? I'm running a connection through a wireless router which connects 4 comps within my household, and when I look at my connection speed, it says 36MBPS... yet all my downloads are going at 5 kb/s or slower. Usually it's arround 2-3 kb/s. Any ideas on how to speed this up?

Many bittorrent clients (the ones you should use) keep an upload to download ratio. If you don't also upload to the network, these clients will throttle your transfers. Be a considerate pirate and upload. You might not even realize this is happening.

A related problem is just that the download you are accessing does not have enough uploaders. If one person uploads even at their full speed, 20 downloaders don't get much for themselves. The US does not have as high of a broadband consumer base as Canada, and therefore the number of people who can match your internet speeds at popular sites will be comparatively few.

In fact, if you allow uploads from your own machine, you actually increase your download speed by moving some of the people from the sources that you are accessing to your own upload connection. Basically, there will be more bandwidth for everyone, not just for the people who are getting from you.

You can also correct the client settings, often there are fields for what type of connection you have. This depends heavilly on the client.

A side note, in case this is not already well known, your internet connection speed is probably measured by your provider in bits while most transfers are shown in bytes. Therefore, for a typical 1.2Mbps DSL connection you would get a maximum transfer speed of 150 KB/s. On cable, you could get 2-3x the speed if the other person supports it. You definitely won't come close to your wireless connection speed in either case.

forwarding ports on your router can speed up your dl as well

It's quite common that it's just one guy seeding. It may only be a 2K/sec and take 2 days - just leave the machine on. Also, always right click/save your torrent files so you can easilly resume them without having to find the links again in the giant online tracker lists.

Thanks for the help guys I always allow alot of uploading. Usually people upload from me three times as much as I download from them. It's just SO SLOW to get a movie at 2 KB/S. I followed the directions on that site for forwarding ports.... so we'll see how that works. I just keep hearing everyone downloading at 50 KB/S, and my 2 KB/S are getting on my nerves :S

Which one of these connections do I add the direct ports too? Also does every port become a new service under the settings menu?

I call BS on that, At work we have a 100mb phatpipe and Ive pulled less than 100kb, if you get a bad seeder, you get a bad seeder no matter how good your routing skills are.

Anyways, One thing that F'ed me up at work was when I put WinXP sp2 on my machine, it auto-enabled Windows Firewall, make sure that crap isnt on (unless you use it, then make sure those ports are open)

hey james see if you get this bug with sp2.. if you use winamp.. set the output to be wavout.. play a song it will just stop and then start to play with no more audio..

but if you select the output to be directsound it works fine.. MS conspiracy LOL

Ok... I think I'm going to direct port from my router.... ports 6881-6889. But now that I'm at this screen I'm not sure how

hehe Colin, lemme guess the IPs 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.? (depending on how many machines)Linksys Special baby!

Anyways, lets assume your machine's grabbing the IP: 192.168.1.101, just specify that IP, the port range and make sure you click "enable"..The problem with Linksys routers is that they only allow a certian number of port forwards (I think its 6?) and it wont say anything when you hit that number so make sure you only have a few rules in place at a time.

edit: the Application field is just a name to give to your rule basically, call it whatever you want , start is going to be 6881 (or whatever it is) end is 6889. It should open up everything inbetween.

Also, use this client, it will let you know if you have your rules right when the little circle in the top right goes Green, it will work with yellow as well, but that means you dont have all the ports open generally

Ryan - hah your right about that SP2 bug...Another bug I noticed (well, hardly a bug) but with the XP firewall on, sending email is completely wack, there is about a 1-1.5min wait on messages (sitting next to a dude at work we realised it)

Thanks for the help. I probably sound the most computer illiterate person ever.... but hey. One more question if that's alright. I disabled the "DHCP Server" on my router setup, which it said I needed to do to use "direct ports". Now.... when it lists my IP address it lists it as 192.168.1.* (that star is only one number... not three). The rest of that box is empty. Is that normal? Is that my complete static IP address now?

Ryan.... We have Sattelite internet, and our IP is Platinum communications.

This is what I've done for direct porting on my connection........ It's the router porting I dont get
