well the other night i got a ticket...

i got a ticket for "following too close" $170 fine...i was wondering if anyone knows if, i will lose demrit points from my license?, or can it effect my insurance preimum???

I got a following to close when I was 16. I didn't have any demerits taken off as far as I know and it didn't effect my insurance. But that was before everything got changed..

if you have nothing else, i would say your insurance is safe. you need a few demerits before they take notice.

Does it affect insurance? Don't know for sure, but a couple years ago I got 4 speeding tickets in 1 year (bad, but didn't have any for like 8 years before that, and none since) and my insurance still went down about the same amount it did every other year.

Check off the 'not guilty' plea on the ticket and mail it in. You'll then get a court date notice in the mail where you can go down and work something out with the Crown Prosecutor.

The officer who issued the ticket will show up and just tell him you're concerned about demerit points and that you don't mind paying the fine. They should wave the demerits no problem.

There is another thing you can try rather than waiting for the court date. After about two weeks try going down to the traffic courts down on 7th ave, wait in the line on the left, and tell the person in the window that you would like to speak to a screening crown prosecutor. They are very good about cutting you a deal and you can usually do the same thing and tell them you are concerned about the demerits but you'll pay the fine and that'll work.

Not that I get tickets too often, but I generally prefer this to mailing the ticket in and going in on the court date simply because you can get things done with sooner and if the screening crown prosecutor isn't too receptive or you don't like the deal, you'll have a second chance by going to the court date anyways.

Just be sure to go early in the morning and I've done this three times and have a perfect abstract so let me know if you have any questions.

yup, like road runner said.. i had 4 or 5 demerits for a speeding ticket... I had to pay a lesser fine and get my speedo checked out, but the points were knocked off. no court, just meet w/ guy at traffic court. but go early, like before it opens... otherwise, pack a lunch

bummer dood. gone are the days of getting a warning when you're pulled over. now they get you for everything.

i usually go up to the wicket on the date the ticket says. i always plead NOT guilty. they then give you a court date. its usually months away. go then. when the court opens up, you can talk to the prosecutor. tell him the story. by the time this ends up in court, sometimes the next year, they are usually so backed up with other stuff, that you usually get the break.

i have been doing this for like 15 years. i've had at least a dozen speeding tickets. i wont mention all the other crap they tried to get me with, and failed! if you can come up with fair and reasonable wording, i find that you are usually OK. (beat an illegal lane change ticket friday for the wife!)

plus the cop has to prove that you were following too close. dont forget that even though you may be traveling at a safe distance, the cops will argue that poor road conditions were a factor for issuing the ticket. goo luck!

on a side note, i know what it looks like to follow too close but what do you guys think cops use as a guage for this?

Speaking to the Crown:

You may plead your case ahead of the stated time and date of your hearing to the Crown Prosecutor and Justice of the Peace here in Calgary, for violations occurring within Calgary, at Rocky Mountain Plaza Downtown. 100, 7th Ave SE. The line-ups are generally long, so get there early (8:30 at the latest) as they can only see a specific amount of people per day. This would be where you would go to argue any sort of disagreement between what the Peace Officer said happened, and what you say happened. You may have luck in having the fine lowered, the charge changed to a lesser offence, and/or a reduction/removal of demerit points. The CP may also throw the ticket out completely, depending on the circumstances.

/\/\ agreed. double the travel. i do it that way because of a prior problem i had trying the mail in method. did not go well. (guess i could have said that) yes, sometimes you do get lucky and get to speak to someone quickly (and someone nice!) however that wait does suck. i just like to stick them with the paperwork now.
