Towing with Golf GL

Just wondering if anyone here has done any towing with a Golf. I have a 2001 GL and I may be going from Calgary to Nova Scotia this summer. I'd have to bring a few things, the biggest thing being my motorcycle. The bike's less than 400lbs and I'd say that at most I'd load up a small trailer to a max of 750lbs. Is this possible? Thanks!

Is it a 2.0L? I can't see that it would be that bad, might give you some grief on the hills.

I think VW lists a tow rating on Golfs, you could check the website (maybe).

Thanks guys...I've been driving that Volvo for years and just got the Golf so I'm not too familiar with what it can do. I looked on VW and some other websites but didn't really find what I was looking for.

look in the "certified pre-loved" section. It generally has a gtood comparison of the cars.

Volkstech could have a point, not sure how strong the auto's are, might get too warm. There's gotta be info somewhere, maybe a search on VWvortex will come up with something

Should be alright, 1000 lbs is only like having a 100 lb passenger on a flat road. You're not climbing the rockies, so keep the revs up and don't use 5th on any hills.

A hyundai elantra has a rated towing capacity of like 1200 pounds or something, I am sure a manual transmission Golf can do it.

Hey Guys:

I noticed on the gas door the max Load capacity on my Jetta 1.8T is 950lbs for manual and 900lbs for an automatic. I do know if this is relivant to towing load but I am sure it couldnt be to much heavier then that!

With a manual you should be fine. Just don't use the clutch as a foot rest.

Kind of off topic but that's a pretty wild trip you've got planned and I am extremely jealous! I'm off to Tibet for about a month in May but that's all the travelling I get to do for a long time. I met people when I was in Oz who had driven there from the UK, but they did it in Land Rovers. My friend and I have always kicked around the idea of riding to Argentina but he's in school and I just bought a new bike last spring that is not practical for the ride. Anyways, your plans look awesome!!
