Re: Quick Oil Change question.
yes it does make a difference on higher mileage cars, especialy as some begin to burn more oil as they age.Originally posted by The_Stig View PostThe audi dealer told my dad his car only needs an oil change once a year. So 15-20k i guess. he drives a 2.0L T A4.
Ihave been doing mine aroung 5k but i wasent sure how much you could streach it if you wernt able to get it done for a while. Or does it make a differnce with cars that have higher km? Mine has 160k.
As i stated previously, the OIL is fine for 15K-20K....its the FILTER that isn't. It stops filtering the oil properly and thats when you end up with problems.
What you can do is change the oil once for every 2 filter changes, or because you are down there just do the whole thing every 8000km's.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
I change mine every 8,000 kms. Have been doing so since Day 1 at SouthCentre with whatever they put in (Don't even know actually to be honest). Now with about 46,000 kms and counting on my '03... this means I change my oil roughly every 9 months or so.
Do I go from Summer to winter with the same oil? Yes.
Do I go more than 3 months with the same oil? Yes.
Do I actually "Drive" my GTi like its supposed to be driven? Yes.
Does my oil look "Black" when it gets changed? Yes.
Do I care? No.
Have I had a single engine, mechanical, power, seal, whatever issue since I bought the car? No.
Do I intend to drive the car for 200,000 kms or more? No.
Do some people think I'm crazy? Yes.
Do I care? No.
Merry Christmas... Deuce.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
first post, and its about oil, lol. agreed on the oil check ^^^^. good rule of thumb is to change when the oil when the color changes from a dark golden brown to just hard dark brown or black. 'thenatural' changed his oil every 2500 kms on his honda (comparing apples to oranges i know!) and his hard driving finally blew his motor at ~375,000 Kms. i was impressed. a mechanic told me using synthetic oils is useless unless the motor has been fed it since birth. maybe he is right, but i didnt listen. i use Castrol Syntec 10w30 in my Mk2 engine.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
drop 20 or 30 bucks and get your oil analyzed after 8 or 10k and see how it is doing.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
Reason I ask is that I believe a lot of other manufacturers including porsche are up to 10K+ miles before changes. I'm getting close to 8k and already have the filter+oil - it's more a question of wasting for no reason.

What's the recommended service interval in the US? In miles?

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
the biggest issue with synthetic oil isn't the oil itself its the filter. i would never want to keep the same filter for 10,000Km's....but thats just me.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
as far as i understand, synth is pretty stable, so time isn't too big a deal with synth, it shouldn't break down over time at the same rate regular oil does. you have to worry about contaminants before you have to worry about loosing lubricating ability over time. The synth oil can still probably lubricate even after 10K, but standard filters probably can't keep it clean.
at least thats the understanding i have....
someone should send their oil in for an analysis some time to see what state it's in after 5000km. i think it's kinda pricy to do this though...Last edited by stefan; 12-10-2007, 08:35 PM.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
Used to be every 6 months, but since less driving this year I'm going to shoot for 10K which is about 6000 miles. Replace filter every time, and I use penzoil platinum 5/40 synth. A few bucks cheaper than castrol but has good reviews.

Re: Quick Oil Change question.
8k is fine on a 1.8t using syntec 5w40
if you have a big turbo or drive your car nuts then i'd go with every 5k on syntec
