The heater fan in my 98 Jetta is getting really squeally. Anyone ever tried to swap out one of these? Or seen a DIY fix? I'm thinking it will be a pain in the butt, but might be a project for spring.

My heater fan does the same thing when it is cold outside
I was going to wait till spring to get into it and see about a fix !

It's a painless swap-out. it's just behind the glovebox. Mine wines a bit when it's cold out too, the nature of the beast.Like Type 2's? Visit my blog!

a bit would be ok, but this one is getting excessive, and its not just when its cold (although it is worse). Its gets even louder when you turn right.. heh.Stefan

that was super easy. fan came out in about 10 mins, then i sprayed a whack of electrical cleaner through it, tried to flush out old grease, packed some new grease in to the one end of the axle that the fan spins on, tried to lube up the other side of the axle too, but its hard to get at. Cleaned up the area where the brushes make contact, threw it all back together, and its nice and quiet now. Hope it lasts.
I don't think the brushes would have been replaceable. the whole unit is pretty much built to never take apart.
Germanautoparts.com has this motor for about 75$ though, so if the squeel comes back, I'll try that.Last edited by stefan; 02-23-2008, 03:35 PM.Stefan
