  • 205s and cold starts

My son's Golf has 205s. It does not like starting cold. Below 0 C, the cranking time increases. I tried it this morning (-25?) and it started after maybe 20 seconds of cranking. With my Jetta (stock), it always catches in a second.

    - I've checked that all glow plugs work
    - I've increased the glow time.
    - Timing is fine (slightly advanced).
    - Battery is solid.
    - I've tried a couple of different IQ setting, but it does not seem to matter.

I still need to check that the temperature sensor is reading right, which I'll do tonight.

The question is does anyone else find that larger injectors cause cold start problems? I'm wondering if it is worth trying stock injectors.

    Re: 205s and cold starts

I didn't find that my car with the 205 installed started much different. I did, however, get a diesel flush done @ tunedub a couple weeks ago, and I kinda think that improved starting. I have a pan heater that was plugged in, but it fired pretty much right away this morning.
George said that fuel system flush is a good idea every 80,000km. Would your son's car fall in there? Mine was at 208000 without ever doing it.

Car was a little peppier after the flush to (pretty sure its not all in my head...)

I have 205s too and after a no-starts on Monday and Tuesday I moved it into the garage and kept it plugged in. Tried to start it 10 minutes ago and it fired up right away. Lots of black smoke though. Will drive it around a bit this afternoon.

I have some cans of diesel purge I need to use to clean up my injectors. You might also want to change your fuel filters as when diesel gets cold it gels and an older filter might have a hard time pushing it through.

Fuel filter is new and I use lots of good fuel conditioners. It runs well. 8.5 sec 0-60 without problems on the winter tires.

I might swap injectors between the cars on the weekend and see what happens.

Plugged in it starts right away. It is just the dead cold starts.

bad glow plug? they can fail without getting a light on the dash. Easy to check w/ multimeter.

I went nuts...pulled all the plugs and powered them up from the harness. They all glow wonderfully.

Don't use either on a glow plugged engine....

                        Re: 205s and cold starts

plugs should draw 20 amp each with temp sensor unplugged, 80amp with entire bridge connected. check ground of plug to head with circuit tester, resistance of plug to head should be below 2.0 ohms.
Also Lubri-Molly Diesel High Test, half a can every other tank or so and your golden!!!! Black smoke is a rich smoke!! Temp sensor green 4 pin on alh and bev, grey on mark 5 tdi-pd. Dont know if that helps at all fellas!!

OK, it is verified, it is the nozzles...

Last night I swapped the injectors between the cars.

                          - Golf now has stock injectors.
                          - Parked outside all night.
                          - Not plugged in.
                          - -28C on the thermometer this morning.
                          - Fired straight up.

Where did you get the 205's from? My car has started almost everytime and I have the PP764's from Kerma. The holes are the same size I hear, so its either the quality or lack or balance of the injector.

i noticed that you stated "timing is fine" but, it sounds to me like the static timing of your pump is out.
[use vag-com "tdi timing checker" to have a look at your static timing. i would say that it's too retarded. make sure the car is in "basic settings" when you look at the timing graph. set your static timing at the top of the graph (most advanced acceptable setting) in the timing-checker. ]
