Hi my name is Dave im from langley, B.C. and im thinking of getting a mk 4 gti 1.8t. I was just wanting some feed back of the car. Any particular problem or quirks with them. I had a 93 jetta 2.0 and it was a complete piece of ****. Anyways cool site thanks.

Dave! Welcome.

I think that there are benefits and drawbacks to ANY car. The question is, what are you looking for? If you buy a car that does not suit your personality you will hate it. Here at NVD we love VW's so we are biased.

Here are the primary advantages to the VW and 1.8T engine:

- High quality interior. There is no comparison, VW has the nicest cabins.

- Fast. Compared to most cars in the price range, VWs are pretty quick. Mind you, in the past 2 years new cars have gotten more competitive.

- Tunable. The 1.8T is highly tunable with just a chip or exhaust or other small mods, you can reach 200+ whp on a stock turbo. Or 300+ whp with a turbo upgrade.

- THAT HOT EURO LOOK!


Common problems are coilpacks (fixed for free due to recall), Mass Air-Flow sensors (also recalled), window clips (also fixed on recall I think), and occasional rattles and squeaks. The 1.8T engine itself is famously one of the best built general-market car engines of all time.

Some people do not like the turbo "feel" compared to NA engines. Other people do not like the VW styling, thats just personal preference. VW suspension isn't the best in the world I will freely admit.

Best advice: Drive the cars you think you would like. You will know right away. Picking a car "on paper" makes no sense.

As for me I have driven nothing but American made cars and trucks, this is my first VW and I will never turn back. The fit and finish is superb and the quality of workmanship in building the car is impecable.

hey Dave! Welcome to the boards.

Any MK4 is good so you can't really go wrong there.. unless of course you get a light blue colored new beetle convertible - then I'm afraid i won't be able to resist teasing you

I've got a few friends in Langley that I always visit - I love that place. Do you go to school there? perhaps we know some of the same people.

Anyway, have fun on here. Everybody's real friendly.

Welcome to the boards Dave!!

Yes we are a bunched of biased dub lovers here, but like the others said try what you like, but a dub does have lots to offer! I have owned two MK4 1.8Ts and they where both great so you should be able to find something you like, and if you need any help all you have to do is ask!

Welcom Dave!

Personally, I love my 1.8T. My previous car was a '91 Mustang GT 5.0L, so I'm no stranger to horsepower. However, some days when I'm burning down Crowchild Trail, I swear the 1.8T has just as much juice. When that turbo is all spooled up... its always a fun ride.

As for the interior... love it! The all black interior with the funky blue/red lighting continuously gets the ooohs and ahhhs from all the ladies. As for the coilpack, MAF, window clips, etc... All of these problems have been fixed for 2003 and above.

After 6 months of owning my NewVeeDub... if I really had to pick out something to rag on... it would be the "Brake Dust!" When you're cleaning 15-spoke rims... that dust drives me batty. Oh well... I guess when you're cruisin' at 160, its nice to know you can stop in a couple hundred feet or so.

This is my first turbo vehicle and I don't think I can go back to naturally aspirated ever again.

yea neil the turbo owns.. i got a ride in mikes GLI and it felt pretty smooth too though.. gotta drive it myself sometime but i told mike not until i'm chipped so he can drive mine with more power to make a comparison

Thanks for the nice welcome everybody. I know bar nome vw's are some of the niceest looking cars on the road. I drove the gti 1.8t in both 150hp and the 180hp liked them both. I was just concerend that it would be a money pit like my Jetta was. In one year I changed the engine, clutch, rad, exhaust, windshild wiper motor, brakes, wheel bearings, etc it was no fun but I have renewed faith that a gti will fit me best. Plus im 6'5'' and its hard to find cars i fit in.

My car IS a money pit but thats by choice!

I doubt you would need to change the engine!

Clutch... well some people ruin their clutch, thats not the car's fault. Same for breaks.

I love my Dub, but I dont really agree with this. Mine has tons of rattles coming from everywhere... and alot of the interior is plastic. Well obviously its not an all-wood interior for the price... but I don't think you can beat it for vehicles in the same class.
