With an aftermarket deck, you used to need 2 control boxes (for like 200 bucks) to make the wheel controls work. Has that been improved in the last 5 years? I'd like a new alpine deck but I want to keep my wheel controls even if it costs 100. But not 200+ - Thx!

Ok thanks, still confusing about how many different boxes/options there are.

Anyone recommend a local shop or should I just order all this stuff through crutchfield and pay the duty?

Crutchfield has a canadian outlet but they are most likely not the cheapest place to buy online.

So do you guys say I need both the PAC_C2R_VW and the PAC_SWI_JACK then I should be golden with the Alpine CDE-103BT?

            http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/cde-103bt/

Will I still need a wiring harness as well or does the PAC replace it (looks like it replaces)

Well after much digging, I ordered a Pioneer 6200-BT for 140 bucks, with pocket, harness, antena, then I got the Metra Axxess ASWC for 39$ which gives full steering wheel controls.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/ ships to Canada via UPS but includes all shipping in advance, so no surprise duty/brokerage. All in, under 250 for everything. Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

Where is the microphone for BT integration? Front of the head unit?

It's on a 13' wire, pics I've seen have it on the steering column. Could just leave it loose or run it to my boost gauge on the a-pillar.

Just a followup - I installed the Pioneer, and went with an Axxess control box for 40$ and it works PERFECTLY

                    http://www.axxessinterface.com/

Just 2 wires from the harness to a small box that tucks under the dash, +ignition power/grnd. Autodetects the car, and the stereo. Can customize the buttons too if needed. But the deck must have 3.5mm jack for wheel control.

                    Very pleased!

Always love headunits that match nicely with the OEM interior lighting scheme. Thanks for posting up the info regarding the steering wheel control MODS, I've been thinking of changing up the HU and was worried about losing that functionality.

the mic should be an separate piece that plug into the back of the deck, and mk4s dont need the pac harness, you just have to run an accessory wire from you fuse box unless you can remember to turn it off every time manually, a small price to pay to save urself 180 bucks, and i can get the steering wheel control modual for cost at futureshop. so it should only be around 40 bucks.

i would also try not to run the mic to the piller, i usually put them around the rear view mirror, so if ur driving with ur window down u get less wind interference
