  • MK IV dash lights stopped working

Went to pick the GF up from work yesterday and when the sun went down I turned my headlights on. The problem was the headlights were the only thing that turned on. The radio switched over to night mode, but the guage cluster lights were out, as well as the dash lights on the buttons, seat heaters etc.

I've checked all the fuses and not issues.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking it must be the dimmer/rheostat or the headlights switch itself, I just wondered if anyone else here has experienced something similar.

Definitely sounds like the rheostat, could also be the dimmer control in the switch.

Pull both the dimmer and headlight switch out and measure the voltages. The Dimmer should vary from around 9v to 11.5v There should be a couple different 12v supplies on the back of the headlight switch, google the pinout.

Awesome sounds good, I ordered a dimmer switch after checking the voltage, but if that doesn't work I'll let you know and try out your headlight switch.

Finally got the dimmer from vw today. Put it in and the dash lights still dont work, both cluster and dash lights.

Strange thing is i've got power at the harness to the dimmer. Could it still be the headlight switch or do you have any suggestions as to what I should try/check next?

Very likely it's the headlight switch.

Yeah just metered the headlight switch and found no power on the blue/grey wire. I guess I need a new one. What is the difference between the euro and na headlight switches?

Take it apart and check the contacts. They are not very hard to take apart.

Thanks for the tip, took it apart and gave it a quick cleaning between contacts, still doesn't work. I'm gonna grab a new switch and see.
