  • ABS keeps activating when braking

    The problem:
When braking and hit exactly 10km/h, my ABS activates.

    Where I'm at:
Replaced rotors, pads, all ABS sensors, ABS pump, have done a bleed of the entire system, and have re-calibrated the entire ABS system.
No fault codes or CEL are showing.

    Still having the issue!

Someone please tell me what I've missed.

    The story:

I had my ABS light on, when I was braking and hit exactly 10km/h, my ABS activated.

I checked the wheels and noticed the front right ABS ring was mangled from the Previous Owner.

I tested the ABS sensors and the front were reading bad.

I replaced the front sensors and had a VW expert shop replace the front right ABS ring.

This made the ABS light go away. But my ABS activation problem was still happening.

Replaced the rear ABS sensors. I also replaced the rotors and pads all around.

I checked and my ABS sensors are within 0.3mm of the ABS rings.

    Same problem.

I did VAGCOM test, drove with VAG hooked up and monitoring the sensors. I pressed the brakes, when I slowed down to 10 km/h, the ABS activated but none of the sensors showed as bad.

VW expert shop said it was probably the ABS pump.

Bought a good condition GLI ABS pump with all the module numbers identical and recoded it for my car.

The GLI ABS pump was coded as 0019970. My original pump had 0019458 which makes sense since using the calculations from RossTech: 0000002+0000000+0018432(all diesel engines)+0001024(drive by wire engines) = 0019458.

I used a pressure bleeder and Vagcom to bleed the ABS pump and to calibrate all the sensors.

    Same problem.

Not sure if this is relevant but I'l post anyway. A similar thing happened on a different car years ago. The car being my dads on this side of the pond.

My dad used to own a Nissan Primera. Its one of these ugly things.

The exact same thing happened, abs kicks in at low speed. I changed the caliper and brakes etc. But same problem still showed.

It turned out to be the CV joint. But I have NOOOOO idea if its the same on a VW..

This is the link for a Nissam primera forum showing the same problem:

Thanks, at least this gives me something to look at! I'll take a look at my CV joint.

I am going to replace my rear wheel hubs anyway, they feel a bit stiff and don't rotate as smoothly as they should.

I've been trying to figure out my next move, I'd hate to replace the entire ABS wire harness!

On aside note: is there any method to temporarily disable ABS? I'd love to pass the OOP inspection so I can at least drive while I continue working on the problem.

I have ran into this on different makes but the theory and operation is the same. I would look at the abs rings that the sensor reads.
If there is an issue with a ring, not running true or even cracked the sensor gets a faulty reading a slower speeds

When I checked and cleaned the rings they all seemed in good shape, no missing or cracked spots, though a little rusty. The front right ring was already replaced and I'm replacing the rear ones as they are part of the Hubs. Maybe that will fix it.

Also have seen that when anti seize compound was used it played games with the sensor, as cooper is a conductor, and sensor would get funny readings and
              set abs system off

Where was the antiseize compound used? You mean on the sensors when installing them?

Re: ABS keeps activating when braking

Yes it was applied around the sensor so it would not seize in the hole, this type of sensor went into a bore hole and is steel so it has a tendency to seize in place
use a none conducting type of lube if you feel you need to use something.

I thought maybe my new pump is bad, I reconnected my old pump and I am getting the exact same issue!

Old and new pump are identical:
                              pump 1J0 614 517 J

Someone tell me what is going on... :(

Keep in mind this didn't happen before I switched the pumps, has some wire in the main electrical loom somehow gotten disconnected?
