I just did this yesterday. Made a noticeable difference, tranny feels smoother now. I got it from Shaw GMC and was on sale for $10. It's usually $15. From the research I did I got the one that was friction modified apparently its better then the regular syncromesh fluid.

Also if you need the tamper proof triple square for tranny drain plugs princess auto only place I could find them.

Did mine today, feels better for sure, 1-2 isnt great still, but I wasn't expecting it to be a miracle fix. Parking it in 2nd has relieved it a bit too.

VW may say they spec 75W90 but after changing from G050 to the G052, the spec'd oil tested more like an ATF.

As you can see the VW fluids are very light when hot, which is why people in warmer climates complain of notchy shifting.

I personally run a 50/50 of Gear 300 (highest VI and pour point of -60) with oem G070 giving me something around a Redline MTL.

A lot of people seem to have good luck with the new Synchromesh fluids as they have GL-4 additive packs with good base stocks, some have reported success with the new friction modifier synchromesh fluids as well.

Bottom line, just get a high quality manual trans oil with GL-4 rating, something lighter on the scale if you park outside in -30 weather....

Synchromesh is about $10-$20/ bottle from GM dealership, and I also agree it works great.

Can't remember off the top of my head how much it was, but I bought it from GM directly and it wasn't that expensive.

How did it go? I'm looking at doing this in my GLi soon and was reading MT-90 was a favorite. Would like to hear your first hand experience with the GM stuff

Didn't get aroud to it, things came up, going to definitely get it done while the Chinook is here and it's not -27.
Will report back when she's all done.

Factory fluid for the 02M is 75W90.

That is what VW states, but it is not what VW puts in the boxes. The 052 lube they supply has been tested to be a 75W80, despite the 75W90 labelling and that is why Redline MTL and GM synchromesh work well...

I put the mt-90 in my 02M and had it in there for a week because it felt worse than the old oil that was in it. I bought syncromesh from GM and it felt much better so It's in all my cars now. I wouldn't say that it fixes any gears like some people have said because nothing is going to magically fix your worn syncros I dont think. No experience with Motul but I think its a lot more expensive.

Same with 02A and 02O (Side note). Pretty sure almost all VW manual transmissions are recommended to have 75W/90.

I'm well aware of viscosity ratings. That is very thick. The GM syncromesh is a 75W-80. Basically 1/2 the viscosity of a 75W-90.

Factory fluid for the 02M is 75W90.
