foul burning smell

hey guys, my car smells like burnt plastic. Everytime I push the car it smells like crap, and I dont know what it is. The dude at northland said that my clutch had probably slipped and it wasnt happening anymore, but when I came home today it stunk again. Does anyone know what this could be?

After hard driving, I smell:

- Tires
- Brakes
- Very rarely clutch

Mmmm car burning smell.

Its probably tires, but the way you drive may wear your clutch I guess... dunno.

thats prolly clutch.. when i roasted mine pretty good the smell lasted for at least 4 days.. also well this won't apply to you anymore but when my car was brand new the first 2 weeks after long drives the engine bay smelt like that too and it was the plastic inside umm getting used to being hot i guess lol

So for replacement clutches, how much do they usually run?

Is it better to get an after market clutch when the stock when gets all fudged up?

Installed, I would budget atleast a G note for a good clutch.

Ive been looking at ACT, they seem to have some good stuff I guess. . . I mean its a pretty yellow, what more could you want in a clutch . . . anyways their 6 pad set up is rated at 450 lb/ft, Id imagine that would be plenty for me, but I guess there would be draw backs to having a 6 pad clutch. The street set up is more expensive and is only rated for 350, I guess thats a lot still, but I wonder why its more expensive? they also have a 4 pad setup. I donno what any of them mean. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't get a "puck" clutch for sure.

Run your clutch until it won't even drive (slips bad) before you replace it. Otherwise you could be replacing a perfectly good clutch.

I agree about 1k installed is the price.

Also might want to think about other transmission related upgrades such as:

- LSD
- Lightened Flywheel
- TDI 5th Gear

err, that all depends if he wants to replace his flywheel as well. If you keep driving your car with the clutch slipping you're going to wreck the flywheel. Now thats fine, as most people take this opportunity to replace it with a lightened version.

and as in the thread in the performance section, OEM vr6 clutch (300ft/lbs) with lightened flywheel installed is about $1000 at concept1.

I would replace the flywheel anyhow.....you cannot resurface the DMF's, so once they go, they go, and no sense running 2 clutches till they die on a poor flywheel to begin with.....It has been blamed in many clutch failures as the causative factor....
