auto tranny fluid change? necessary?

I have a 2001 2.0l auto golf and I think it's time to change the tranny fluid. The car has 84,000 km. The dealer says that it never needs to be changed since it's a sealed unit and it's a "lifetime fluid".I think the reason it's "lifetime" is because that's for the lifetime of the warrenty.

my question is should I do it?

Has anyone done it themselves, or is it better to get it done at the dealer for hundreds of dollars?

Changing it can't hurt even if it doesnt need to be changed. I am not sure how hard it is but most fluids are simply drained and replaced

"lifetime" means for the lifetime of the warranty. Bring it by SCFC we have a slick trans flush machine that will actually flush out the torque converter as well as all of the passages in the transaxle. We then fill it with synthetic transaxle fluid. It's the slickest service I've ever done. I did one on my Eurovan, It never shifted better! Call 255-6681 and book your apointment now! Oh yeh ask for Dave to work on your car, that's me!! (Plug, Plug).

Any idea what you guys charge for that at South Centre? When I asked last time at Fifth Ave. they didn't have a clue because they had told me they've never done it. Lifetime fluid my ***.

I know it's probably a good thing to do but if it is done and I don't notice that it is shifting smother I am out hundreds of bucks and I will feel like it was a waste.

I don't have an idea how much it is. It's always a good idea to change your fluids on a regular basis. We all know how VW auto transaxles are.
Pay little now or pay huge later...

I just drained mine on a 94 020 transaxle, The fluid looked shiny like there was metal flakes in it. Replaced it with some redline and I'm gonna pray she holds together.

There is no maintenance considering a waste of money but you need to reason what is enough to begin with. Let’s put it this way. The fluid in the tranny is for its lubrication, hydraulic pumps and cooling. There are many moving parts inside the slushbox. Inside the slushbox have a filter to filter out the big particles. The filter will continue to operate to filter the big particles but not all particles will get filtered out. The fluid get past the filter can never return to its new state.

Now you think why I need to change fluid if they are for life. Old tranny fluid is in black color when it drained out. So what caused the color changed in the first place?

IIRC $400 total fluid, filter and parts included. Bring it to the dealer. They will not f-up.

You are welcome to blame VW because of the statement given.

Set your tranny softcode to 000012 sport mode. DSP off. (SDP su-X in the first place) See if it make a difference if not then you are ready to fire a letter to VW.

i read my friends owner manual 2000 jetta and no where does it state life time fluid.
there's just no schedule for replacement.

Manual trannie fluid is supposed to last forever too . . . closed system and all. I don't buy it, but that's my personal opinion - like others have said, spend a little now or a LOT later.

haha eventually a gear will grind and leave some metal flakes in the fluid which i'm sure you don't want sitting in there.. i'm going to get mine flushed this fall..
